Filippo Lippi's wonderfully strange double portrait, 1440. He's not looking at her but into the empty space behind her. Her sleeve spells Faithful - but to whom? Great enigmas on Lippi's day.

Great suggestion! In Grand Prix, one of my favorite Eva performances, her romance with Yves Montand is so touching and beautiful. It is an unexpected surprise.

"Feminine clothing as a first aid to comedy has its drawbacks," according to Buster Keaton. "If the skirts are too narrow, you may get laughs and take a chance on breaking your neck; if they're too wide, you can do any sort of acrobatic trick and still fall short of comedy," explains the comedian.

Wife murderers don't come any more suave than Edward "Teddy" Bare" (Dirk Bogarde) in "Cast a Dark Shadow" (1955). His initial plan to inherit his wife's fortune does not go as planned, so he takes a second stab at it. But Teddy may not be the master in this chess game. #filmnoir

Movie Monday—Brings us to the last Comique two-reeler, ‘The Garage.' The thrills & spills of being a mechanic are ramped up a notch with the eponymous garage doubling as a fire station. Love rivalry, slapstick shenanigans & an emergency rescue all feature.

Jacques Deray’s THE OUTSIDE MAN (1972). A French hitman is sent to LA to kill a crime boss & then betrayed. Jean-Louis Trintignant is solid as a Euro cult Parker, backed up by great supporting cast. Strong parallels with Boorman’s POINT BLANK, including a great outsiders eye on American culture.

Chabrol's La Femme Infidèle (1969) is a dazzling dark comic thriller with a superb Michel Bouquet deliquescing from complacent smoothie to sweaty avenger when he discovers his wife Stéphane Audran's affair. Chabrol's swooning glides and ruthless close-ups make every scene unsettling. At BFI now.

Ida Lupino in Buddy Westmore’s make-up chair—being “trollop-ized” in the words of Paramount’s publicity department—while working on “The Light That Failed” (1939)
Lupino sits in make up chair, upper body covered with a protective sheet. Westmore leans over her, applying makeup under her left eye. A counter covered in jar, bottles and makeup tools is immediately behind them.

Original caption:
TROLLOP-IZING--It isn't' a new Hollywood diet, but a type of makeup that gives a slovenly appearance to a lovely young girl. Ida Lupino undergoes the treatment at the hands of "Buddy" Westmore for her role in Paramount's "The Light That Failed." The young English actress plays the immortal Bessie role in William A. Wellman's filmization of the Kipling classic.
