A fun fact about neutrinos is that they come in three “flavors” (types) and also in three masses and you would think that this means each flavor has its own mass and you would be absolutely wrong about that.

So when a neutrino is just flying through space unimpeded it has a mass but it is “oscillating” among the different flavors and it doesn’t have a defined flavor until it interacts with something in a way that gives the flavor away. Neutrinos are slippery little things!

Some bizarre shit happening in Econ circles right now where the U Chicago economist who was caught uploading 250+ AI-written papers to SSRN sent an AI-written nastygram to the dean of the guy who caught him, and followed up by posting a Quran verse at him
Tweet from Auyon Siddiq: "I am pleased to announce a new professional milestone: Professor Polson was sufficiently unhappy with my post, and the ensuing Washington Post article, that he decided to email *my Dean* an AI-generated review of my body of work. "Tweet from Auyon Siddiq: "and don't forget citing a Quran verse at me:)"

Screenshot of messages between Polson and Siddiq follows:
Polson: Surah Al-Furqan (25:63)
Siddiq: I'll take that as a compliment!
Polson: Show your parents

One thing I find endlessly funny about the rise of AI is that it has revealed that there is a large number of people who believe that the reason they wrote essays at school or university is their teachers were desperately waiting for them to provide a definite answer to “Lear: what’s up with him?”

NEW: In March the White House released an FY27 budget request that zeroed out the National Science Foundation's directorate of Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE). For months it was unclear what would happen. Now, with FY26 over, the damage to SBE is coming to light. My reporting:

The real reason working-class people almost never become politicians anywhere is that running for office is extremely personally burdensome, and that screens out the people who live the most precarious lives, including working-class people.

A thought: what if we just had fewer positions that were filled by the president's administration? There is no reason that most of these things couldn't be done by career civil servants (e.g., head of the Census, BLS, BEA have all been, in my experience, better when done by a career civil servant)

AI doing things the humans didn't mean for them to do is not good in general, but the Census part (at least based on the text of the article) sounds like it used an API key to fetch public use data. Which seems ... fine. Maybe even exactly why the data exists in that format.

Lately, I have been thinking a lot about the use of Al in economics, econometrics, and causal inference research, and I must say that, right now, 1 am starting to get tired of it, concerned about how many people use it and how lazy it can make us feel! I can't lose the joy of doing the work | love, so here I am, raising some alarm!
For some context, I have been using these tools a lot in the last year or so. Early on, I got super excited, saw its transformative power, wrote a guide about how I used it, and have also given workshops about my workflow. All this in Spring 2026.
Now, as more and more people use these tools, l am starting to see severe consequences of it:
- I am constantly getting Al-written papers to referee.
The writing is so bad and so obvious that it wasn't meant for humans, and I can't be positive about the paper! If authors don't do their work and put effort into the paper, why should anyone evaluating it do it?! The burden must be on the authors!!!- I am seeing Al doing a lot of sloppy work involving data analysis. Subsetting the data, redefining variables, dropping covariates, forgetting to use weights, and more. This happens when I try to replicate published papers and use my own package to see whether the results change. As I know many of these papers, I can catch the errors, but only if I am really alert. Most people that I talk to are NOT alert!
- Al constantly gives you a sense of certainty that I can't even explain, let alone justify. In the topics that I work on (read, DiD), it keeps telling me stuff that I strongly disagree! If I don't have the subject-specific knowledge to be critical and push back, Al-slop gets into the way of everything!
There are many other concerning things that I keep seeing that I won't get into here, but I feel I need to say all these things as a way to SCREAM:
AI IS A TOOL!
IT REQUIRES SKILLS!
THERE ARE NO SHORTCUTS, SO DON'T BE LAZY!
AI WON'T REPLACE GOOD SCIENCE!
My advice: go do an Al detox from time to time to actually build skills!! Spend the entire week doing things the "old way"! You will see how much more grounded you can become!

The quote at the end really clinches this not being an intellectual project. The world is vast and multi-faceted, and so is intellectual rigorous exploration of it. To look at it as “You have two perspectives... exposed to both sides of the argument" is to boil things down to team 1 and team 2

these quotes are the DEFENDANTS, describing THEIR OWN CONDUCT as “an astonishing theft of unprecedented proportions” and the “largest theft of labor in human history” as well as describing their products as “largely substitutive, period” and “will get more and more substitutive as they get better.”
This case is about, as Microsoft’s Director of Applied Science put it, “an astonishing theft
of unprecedented proportions”; SF1437, perhaps the “largest theft of labor in human history.”
SF1652. Defendants repeatedly copied millions of Plaintiffs’ copyrighted articles in their entirety
without permission to produce substitutive commercial AI products. OpenAI’s Head of ChatGPT
wrote that “[p]ublishers” face an “existential threat” from those products, SF1466, which, he said,
“are largely substitutive, period” and “will get more and more substitutive as they get better.”
SF1473-74. Such admissions eviscerate Defendants’ “fair use” defense because substitution is
“copyright’s bête noire.” Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc. v. Goldsmith, 598 U.S.
508, 528 (2023). For Defendants to prevail on this defense “would,” the same Microsoft executive
recognized, arguably “make a complete mockery of the idea of ‘fair use.’” SF1450.
