Like, what do you MEAN Rachel Accurso wants to see you murdered because you're Jewish? No she doesn't, that's only not true that's utterly disconnected from anything rooted in facts. It's not "the sky is green," it's "the sky, a sentient being of aether, likes watching hentai"

Those Michigan rabbis probably have a fuzzy, liberal, inclusive version of Jewish sovereignty in their head. One that is not built on exclusion and discrimination. That version does not exist in reality. They are welcome to articulate it as a vision going forward. This is not what Israel is.

Jewish sovereignty, as it was codified in the Israeli Knesset (2018), is a political system based on exclusion and discrimination. This deep exclusion and discrimination is reflected in government policies, budgets, policing, land policies, etc. No one who believes in democracy should endorse it.

I believe this type of synagogue brings us closer to the divine. But it is only possible to achieve if we make the conscious choice to move past our fear and instead choose to embrace the better world that can come on the other side.

I am glad to be a part of a shul where we can witness the sun set as we daven. And I want our synagogue to aspire for more — to become a place that is open and where strangers to be able to find welcome in our sanctuary.

There are obviously political dimensions to these questions. Those promoting right wing politics have strategic reasons for trading in this kind of fear. But I do think it is worth noting that this hurts Jewish communities in addition to others.

But Kol Nidrei, Neilah, Kabbalat Shabbat — these are all services deeply intertwined with the setting of the sun. When we chose to open the blinds again, it deeply moving to witness the day’s final rays. Moving past fear is a choice we should aspire to make. We should choose to see the sun.

This thread that articulates something I’ve been grappling with. In union organizing, we talk about the need to move past fear even when people do have good cause to be afraid. For a long time, my shul kept the blinds closed because they thought doing so would keep us safer.

Update: the extremely small number of names are listed separately from the article and, well, full on lol at the idea that some of these “leaders“ are accurately representing a majority of Jews in East Lansing and Ann Arbor. Looking forward to vote totals showing this in November!

In my book, abolishing ICE is the true ”nonnegotiable“ Jewish value, not Israel First extremism. The small group of signers of this “letter” do not speak for me. Looking forward to Election Day when a majority of Jewish Michiganders will make our values clear by voting for Abdul 🗳️ ✊

Would be neat if the (many more than two dozen!) Jewish Michiganders who are excited to vote for Abdul because we know that Abolishing ICE is a Jewish value were treated with this level of gravity by the NYT, but 🤷‍♀️

Seems sort of astounding that the paper of record would consider what seems to be a semi-anonymous letter from less than two dozen rabbis this newsworthy, but I suppose I should not be surprised.

Also, as someone who is active in Jewish communal life in Michigan, has anyone seen which rabbis have signed? I’d very much like to know and imagine I’m not the only congregant who might have feelings about our positions being presented in the NYT in this way.

Fully agreed. Relatedly, as someone who is a Jewish Michigander, I am deeply angered that some self-appointed leaders of our community are trying to homogeneously depict the diversity of Jewish views in our state as an Israel First monolith.

You really get the sense that there is a defined difference between people who saw the genocide unfolding in Palestine and decided they needed to build a movement with the breadth, depth and power to stop it and those who decided they wanted to wheat paste and post for clout.

I think something a fair number of people refuse to engage with is that American Jews have good reason to fear for their physical safety. Zionism is a morally and practically disastrous response to that, but the underlying concern is legitimate.
