🧵 For 3 years Critical Mass has held monthly rides with 3 goals in mind: 1. Celebrate cycling + other active transport 2. Protest the lack of physical + social infra that allows for safe travel 3. Create a safe environment to cycle by empowering participants to look out for one another.

Hey Toronto, I just chipped in to support Olivia Chow’s re-election campaign. I did it because I want to keep building on what’s already working - school meals for kids, frozen transit fares and real investments in this city. If you are able to, please chip in too. share.oliviachow.ca/s/0yCwKM31

If walking costs you $1, we all pay $0.01. If biking costs you $1, we all pay $0.08. If bussing costs you $1, we all pay $1.50. If driving costs you $1, we all pay $9.20. Via study that still underestimates climate cost. This isn’t about choice. It’s about who pays for your choice. #citymakingmath

A familiar story for anyone who follows @volts.wtf. “The Chronicle spoke to more than half a dozen grid experts…to try to understand why Texas’s notoriously unreliable grid had a remarkably reliable summer. The answer was unanimous: solar panels and batteries.”

Texas shattered energy demand records this summer. Here's why the grid held up.
Texas repeatedly broke electricity demand records this summer, but ERCOT avoided emergencies as booming solar and battery capacity helped keep the grid stable.

Is it Amsterdam? Copenhagen? No, it's Paris! After years of investment, the French capital has one of the best problems a city can have: bicycle congestion. So if Paris has done it, why wouldn't other cities follow? 📸 Such an amazing photo by @jbpssx.bsky.social

The image is of a four panel comic.
In the first panel we see Sarah, the protagonist, next to a stick figure labeled “AI”. The stick figure says, “my outputs look just like yours now.”
The second panel zooms in on Sarah’s face. Above her we see text reading “I think”.
The third panel zooms in closer on Sarah’s face. Text above her reads “you missed”.
The fourth panel shows Sarah drawing happily in a sunlit room. The text above her reads “the point”.

Every time I return to Paris, I notice they've done more to reclaim streets from drivers and cars, including removing on-street parking, protecting cyclists from drivers, and prioritizing pedestrians and cyclists in shared spaces. Other cities can learn a lot from Paris.

"these lanes offer crucial cushion — space in which to traverse my city in somewhat-safety. They say: I belong here and it’s OK to take up space" A tactic in Ford's 🚴‍♂️ lane media strategy is erasing cyclists from the story. This is the antidote. #BikeTo #ToPoli 🎁 www.thestar.com/gift-redeem?...
I use bike lanes to get to work. I use bike lanes to see friends. I use bike lanes to get to the doctor. I use bike lanes to run errands. And I see, as I pedal, how many others make use of these byways.

I see children crammed into cargo bikes. I see grocery-laden baskets. I see besuited commuters, dress shoes on pedals. I see weighty panniers. I see e-bikers making deliveries. (They catch flak but they’re trying to make a living and should be able to do so safely.) I do see spandexed speedsters and hipsters on fixies but they are the exception.

Ford walked away from an offer to restore travel lanes and keep bike lanes. The RFP makes clear that the province is still targeting EVERY SINGLE METRE of Bloor, Yonge, and University. This wasn't just a ploy to remove bike lanes in Etobicoke. It's an attempt to gut Toronto's entire cycling network.

In a transportation megaproject tit-for-tat, 11 Tory MPPs have issued a statement critical of Carney’s proposed high-speed rail line connecting Toronto to Quebec City.

As first disclosed by the Star on Monday, the two major infrastructure schemes are linked in an informal deal between the federal and provincial governments.

We should all be concerned and angry about the police demands for more money on things that should just be part of their existing job. Negotiating the base police budget is tough because of the system, but we should really demand that it should cover all these items.
hour. The total cost would have been absurd - around
$3 million, Moise says. After some negotiation, the police agreed to a compromise where the city will instead pay $250,000 to hire private security guards to patrol the area, plus $50,000 for supplementary paid-duty officers. It's pushed the budget for the project way beyond the initial $150,000 estimate.
There's a lot that's ridiculous about this. The Toronto Police Service sometimes feels like a telecom provider, with any service change requiring an add-on that costs more money, either through increased premium overtime pay or a budget increase. In recent years, they've told the city that work like managing protests, better enforcement of traffic laws and more regular TTC patrols all require more money beyond their $1.4 billion annual spending allotment.
And now, of course, they're effectively saying pedestrian streets are an extra, too.
ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW
But there's been no evidence offered to suggest pedestrian streets require a bunch of extra policing. In fact, since cars represent a significant danger to pedestrians — killing or seriously injuring more than 100 people last year — there's a reasonable assumption that pedestrians would actually be safer on a car-free street than one with cars.
