It’s been two years since Ontario Place West Island was destroyed for a planned private spa. Hundreds of trees were cut down - here’s a snapshot of the many species who lost habitat. 🧵
Side-by-side comparison of a landscape on the Toronto waterfront. In one scene, an island is covered in trees reflected in a still channel of water. The other image of the same place shows a barren stretch land with a pile of rubble in the centre.

Overnight Ukrainian forces used drones to deliver food to occupied Oleshky, 4,000 kg to 100 drop points. About 2,000 Ukrainians, nearly 50 kids, are still there without normal access to food, water, or electricity. Occupiers shoot down, seize, or resell the supplies, but some still get through.

Toronto and Metrolinx should look to world leaders like Kitchener-Waterloo for lessons on how to provide effective transit signal priority in mixed traffic. This isn’t some kind of exotic solution only possible in Asia or Europe.

One tension in Toronto is the desire to think & dream big vs the reality of what they can actually do. Realistic vs fantasy. How to inspire? The discussion about crime also vaults into fantasy land. What’s offered w tough crime talk when crime is historically down? What of cop crime (🙈🙉🙊)?
The cause might be that we're stuck in a political purgatory. We know what the problems are because big problems often manifest in cities first, where they can be seen everyday in public.
We even know some of the solutions, but they remain out of reach. Framed that way, it's strange to have elections based on issues cities don't control in a meaningful way.
To get around this, a mayoral or council candidate has to appeal to residents' hearts a little more than their minds, presenting a vision — a dream - of the city that could be, even if the reality is they can only nudge the city in certain directions.A would-be mayor should dream big — we all should - but inspiring, vibes-based politics can also play into false illusions. The way crime is being presented this election is an example. People feel unsate but crime is historically low. What will the appeals to those feelings ultimately achieve when the problem is partly perception?
Similarly, candidates talking about crime do so without
mentioning the ongoing, explosive Toronto Police Service corruption allegations. That's crime too. Even Olivia Chow seems to have little interest in addressing it.
Pretending it's business as usual (and perhaps, alarmingly,
ignoring such things is business as usual is another kind of fantasy at work.

What’s up with new, developer-led streetscapes in Toronto not including bike racks? You’re spending big $$$ on custom materials and pavers but then having customers park against random street signs. This is Markham Street by Westbank but the same happened along Wellington by the Well.

This wasn't just a ploy to remove bike lanes in Etobicoke. It's an attempt to gut Toronto's entire cycling network.
