A big flow into a bucket with a small exit pipe leads to the bucket filling (and eventually overflowing). A full bucket can continue to drain into an exit pipe for a long time after the inflow is cut off. A narrow pipe early in the system limits flow even if there are wide pipes downstream.

I once had to present my metabolic engineering work to a mixed audience with executives and engineers but no biologists. I spent a week making diagrams of water moving through buckets connected by pipes to explain the relationship between pools and flows. It seems to get the point across.

So many people need to work on understanding the differences between a “stock” and a “flow”. It makes it far easier to understand things like the national debt versus an annual budget deficit. Or greenhouse gas levels in the air versus the annual emissions of pollution. And so on. And so on.

The 28th Virginia battle flag is a Confederate battle flag that belonged to the 28th Virginia Infantry Regiment. Captured by the 1st Minnesota Infantry Regiment at the Battle of Gettysburg, the flag was brought to Minnesota and exhibited at the state's capitol for several years before passing into the permanent collection of the Minnesota Historical Society after 1896 where it has remained since.

When I did this, they said I just needed a cashier’s check. That seemed perfectly reasonable to me - until we got to closing and they meant I needed a cashier’s check _and_ I still had to sign loan paperwork because they couldn’t be sure the check was good. Grrr…

Independence Lake north of Truckee, #California was on private timber company land, which put it up for sale. Larry Ellison wanted to buy it as a private lake for his billionarity, but the company instead sold it to the Tahoe Donner Land Trust. Now it has trails and free kayak use for the public!

I better than 50 now - the _only_ birthday that got under my skin was 27. I was in the middle of a postdoc project that was going nowhere after having spent the previous 6 years loving graduate school. I suppose that if my crisis of confidence had come a year earlier I would have hated turning 26.
