"what if the democrats become labour on trans rights" is the nightmare scenario for trans people in the united states and avoiding that is why I think we need to continue pushing back on dems who waver as hard as possible

This sort of motif was typified by Reinar Thorolf Christiansen as Migratory Legend Type 5050 - 'The Fairies' Hope for Christian Salvation' (sites.pitt.edu/~dash/type50...). Common versions involve the fairies waylaying priests to ask of their fate on the day of judgement

THE ODYSSEY was a miss for me - Nolan turns the story into such an overt allegory for the breakdown of the Liberal Rules Based World Order that the actual meat of the story is something he has to impatiently speed through to get back to ruminating on Odysseus's liberal guilt over the Iraq War.

He didn't celebrate them, dumbass, the whole book is about his contempt for them and about how special he is for being better than them, that's why the two of you are part of the same project
Tweet by Caitlin Flanagan reading "By the time JD Vance wrote Hillbilly Elegy the whole thing was over. I couldn’t understand why he celebrated those cruel, addicted, uneducated people.

Dolly, I guess, was from the last generation that tended the flame of something pure and often beautiful."

I think, much like many people secretly think they could open a pub/restaurant/bakery/bookshop, everyone vaguely bookish is occasionally possessed a madness that tells them that if the GCSE English set texts were based around their precise taste then it would get kids reading again.

The assumed object of both poem and film aren't very similar at all beyond the fixation on 'childish things', but upshot of Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is basically: "Wake up! It's the middle of the night. You need to make love AND die at the hands of the Cobra Commander!"

A very positive sign that, nearly a year after Kirk's death, many if not most of the people punished for speaking truthfully about him have won legal cases against their former employees and compensation. Again, panicked compliance with Trumpism has only *cost* institutions.

I feel like you have to be a little disruptive in rare invertebrate science. You have to be willing fight and get in trouble for the safety of your favorite little thing, or no one else will. People will always care about elephants and pandas, but it's up to the freaks to talk about Plecostoma.

One of the smartest ideas I've seen in the last few years is instead of trying to find "the Joe Rogan of the left," buy up the news sites of defunct papers and put some money into providing local news coverage in rural areas.

A while back I realized much of what I micro blogged was just me processing stuff out loud, & not in a way that had any benefit for myself or the topic. Often it could just be me articulating my most negative thoughts & foisting them on others! So I had a witch shrink me & now I live in a dollhouse.

From Will Self of all people, an absolutely clinical deconstruction of Kathleen Stock. Nice to know that some writers can see through some of the GC crowd.
J'accuse Kathleen Stock of helping convert an allegation of academic misconduct into the story of 'Cambridge's DEI darling', thereby making Arday's institutional and racial symbolism integral to the accusation. There's no need to label Stock transphobic: she's done it herself, whatever the nonsense she spouts about 'gender criticality'; just as there's no need to demonstrate that her personal agon is that she hasn't been allowed to peddle her own prejudices in return for status and prestige: that, too, she has amply confirmed through her writings and public statements. She, and her supporters clearly feel they are winning: I wonder if they know what that will look like, or how high the body-count will have to go before they're satisfied.

The Kriss piece about Arday is just, on the obvious face of it, completely bonkers, obvious projection from a man who loves hoaxing and embellishing and trolling his audience and who lionises himself because he's still sore about being exposed for mistreating his girlfriend a decade ago.

The Arday case is horrible on all sides, but I think the reason I'm stuck in my anger at his deceptions is that, when he was put on the spot, he spread damaging lies about autism (that we are only really capable of mimicry) that are being used as a ramp by those who think I'm subhuman

I think the ultimate test of this is actually Boris Johnson. Boris *was fired from his first job* for making up stories, only to go on to be hired into a prestigious role at the Telegraph and spend years lying about the EU at Brussels. And I mean literally lying here; not bad punditry.

I know you're not allowed to say this during the current debate, but the reason the left dominates academics, art, comedy, and music is that the right has stupid, discredited ideas, they're not funny, and dull resentment does not make for good art. No grand conspiracy required.

You can tell summer is winding down when The Old Woman Of The Woods starts hunting for meat to help her and her young survive through winter hibernation.
A photo taken from the passenger seat of a moving car. trees and a guardrail, and a rear view mirror in the bottom of the frame. a blue sky and lush greenery. The Old Woman of the Woods, a gigantic shaggy bear-like creature with a face like an old lady (aside from a gigantic red toothy jaw) peers at the passing car. She's probably disoriented as she gets ready to hibernate.

Watching The Killings at Parrish Station and they use a device where an extremely trashy true crime podcast (Crime Sluts) recaps info about the case. This is a really good example of how you should not make ironic pastiches of dogshit, because you end up just making the audience listen to dogshit.

Cannot get over how Galloway opens by talking about how he got involved in 'masculinity crisis' discourse because of a 20-year-old who killed himself over stock trading debts, and his first ideal of masculine virtue, the code he wants healthy young men to live by, is 'First of all, make money'.

Honestly 'Odysseus is a philanderer who likes banging exotic magic women and his claims about wanting to get back home are confabulation' is such a common reading of the Odyssey but to my mind it just vacates all the strangeness and earnestness in the text for a very bland, modern reading.

This is actually an uncanny and deeply unsettling situation in which both Odysseus and Circe are being coerced into trading sexual favours for safety from the other. This is possible because they are both being manipulated into having sex with each other by a third party (Hermes)

*this para is important. William O'Reilly, history don, was found to have plagiarised by the university, and has had sexual misconduct claims against him as well — but he remains in post at Cambridge, and the press/public barely noticed.
Allegations of plagiarism in a doctoral thesis do not usually make for riveting, front-page news. Indeed, in 2023, when the Cambridge history professor William O’Reilly faced allegations of plagiarising student essays, the press coverage consisted of barely half a dozen articles (a tribunal ruled the plagiarism was “the product of negligent acts but was not deliberate”). Few people could care less about what academics get up to.

But Arday could not expect to be similarly insulated by academia’s remoteness. This story has endured, stubbornly, because it is so perfectly calibrated for some of the most combustible charges of Britain’s culture wars: namely, that academic standards have been surrendered to a woke orthodoxy, and that minorities are unfairly advanced in the name of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.

Finally saw WITCHFINDER-GENERAL and very much chagrined to learn that the bizarre and incoherent ending (derogatory) was improvised by the director last minute to avoid a continuity error around a prop gun. Caring that little about your film and that much about continuity honestly disgusts me.

Modern RPGs have developed a nasty habit of explaining fairy tale logic by running it though a sociopolitical lens, which rarely ends well because fantasy premises have many unspoken implications that would horrify the moral sensibilities of most players if they read about it in the New York Times.
