here's my blistering hot take: if you make a generic "fail / mixed success / full success" catch-all move in a PbtA game, you have failed. Moves are specific. They have specific triggers and specific outcomes.

almost any ttrpg bugbear - dice fudging, railroading, murderhobo behaviour, rules lawyering, ignoring the rules, metagaming, coffeeshop play, etc etc - can be a positive thing if the entire playgroup has bought into it and the game in question can support it mechanically.

Not to piss on anyone's cake, but I think the "rules light vs rules heavy" framing of the discourse du jour is probably part of the problem. I personally don't think you can comfortably group everything from Lasers and Feeling and Ironsworn together in one bucket as "rules light".

see i think this is kind of emblematic of a particular confusion that makes discussing ttrpgs in general tricky. That is, conflating "the game-structures that exist in the books" and "the events that take place during play". Both get squished into the term 'game', but they're different things!

'average world of darkness player loves rules-light personal horror' is actually statistical error. average world of darkness player likes simulationism. Martin Erikson, who live in sweden and locks claustrophobic larpers in coffins, is a statistical outlier adn should not have been counted.
