Stanford financial economist Anat Admati @admati.bsky.social just joined here. She’s a leading voice on systemic risk in banks, corporate governance, and finance. I highly recommend following her here and reading her book The Bankers’ New Clothes. press.princeton.edu/our-authors/...

At Wharton, hearing @bhgreeley.bsky.social talk about his wonderful _The Almighty Dollar_ and blushing at this slide suggesting that his approach is “illegitimate intellectual love child” (his words) of Harold James’s work and my own
A slide projected on a screen. Under the heading “James”: finance matters, bankers are historical actors, so are central bankers. Under the heading “Spang”: low finance matters, money is a practice, money has qualities

Every year I go to a festival in Kilkenny where Irish comedians make fun of economists and economics journalists and as an American on stage I know it's my job to both subvert their low expectations and succumb to them

Military, sadly. I'm working on some papers of a guy who got a land grant from the federal government from his participation in the Battle of New Orleans, then strung it into a series of dodgy loans and then ultimately a sugar plantation. I needed a good history of that campaign.

This morning like every morning I made sure my son had a filled water bottle in his backpack, because the middle school tells parents there's lead in the pipes and there's nothing anyone can do about it. I wish we could actually solve actual problems in America.

The gap between rates on new mortgages and existing ones is growing again, which I think is the home sales equivalent of Punxsutawney Phil seeing his shadow www.bloomberg.com/opinion/arti...
Chart showing the average rate on new US 30-year mortgages and the effective interest rate on existing mortgage debt since 1977. The two lines are usually quite close together, with new-mortgage rates significantly higher only in the early 1980s and since 2022.

Not in any obvious way, no. But I do have an internet stalker who's convinced I inherited Horace's fortune and am using it to further the interests of the bank lobby and defeat democracy. He emails me every once in a while and tells me he's blocked me from responding. It's fun.

I am thrilled to announce that the American Studies Program at Boston University will be accepting new PhD Students for the 27/28 academic year. These are fully funded, unionized, 5-year positions, with 4 semesters of guaranteed dissertation fellowship in years 4 & 5.

Application Deadline: December 15, 2026
The American Studies Program at Boston University is a nationally recognized leader in the interdisciplinary field of American Studies. Our students and faculty study the disparate yet interconnected cultures of colonial North America and the United States as seen in the ideas and actions of its people, and as expressed in a range of forms, especially culture, the arts, media, literature, and institutions - often seen through a global or transnational lens. Formerly known as the American & New England Studies Program, we maintain active collaborations with many cultural institutions in the region, especially in the Boston Area. Our large PhD program has produced tenure-track protessors, public historians, museum curators, and directors at major universities, museums, and other cultural and historical institutions.
Funding Opportunities
PhD students receive full funding for up to five years (12 months a year) under a collective bargaining agreement. During this time, they take courses, teach in their fields and disciplines of interest, and develop and write dissertations. The fellowship package guarantees four semesters of dissertation fellowship in years 4 and 5, with no service obligations Additional funding is available from Boston University for travel to conferences, for archival research, and for internships.
Current students have recently received outside fellowships from the Fulbright Foundation, the American Antiquarian Society, the Massachusetts Historical Society, the Huntington Library, the Smithsonian Institution, the Beinecke Library, the Corning Museum of Glass, the New Bedford Whaling Museum, and the American Historical Association.
Graduate Student Association
The Program's own independent Graduate Student Association (GSA) is comprised of elected PhD students who sponsor events and programs for developing professional skills, while representing our students' interests to the governing faculty.
A list of affiliate faculty, available also on the program’s webpage

It's hardly a new observation, but with foreign private sector capital flows into the US absolutely bodying the official sector, the "reserve currency" conception of the dollar is increasingly inappropriate. It's a "portfolio" or "funding" currency now, and has been for a while:

That is the unforgivable problem with terror. It's a performance you have to remember for ever. I am one person, of thousands standing there, 20 years ago. I lived and walked away, and that moment sometimes still arrests me. I remain captive, in a seat in the dark. A group of young men staged a play about how virile and important they were, and one small consequence of all that destruction is that they wasted years of my life. I get to have a wife and children. I used to think that meant I won. I also still live with long bouts of depression. I've got better at managing it, but I didn't win. Nobody wins.
