I'm in the midst of a Star Trek rewatch. I'm at "Subspace Rhapsody" (the Strange New Worlds musical episode), and it's still one of my absolute favorites. Even if you don't like the musical bit, it covers the messiness of relationships and the emotions they engender wonderfully.

They're just envious that the Catholics have figured out how to have an election in which only pre-approved older men are allowed to vote.

There are more roundabouts being installed in the United States, and while many drivers hate them, I think they're fun. I look forward to the day when our roads are just long ribbons of roundabouts chained together.

Our Japanese friend took us out to dinner and she was telling us that in Japan they hear about an almost mythical American figure called Florida Man. We confirmed for her that his exploits were very real and we also let him choose our leaders

Heathcliff approaches the meat store in a brown blimp that says BEEF CIDER in big yellow letters along its side. Two employees watch him, and one says "I love this time of year."

I'm sitting in a medium-sized airport in the Midwest. A maintenance worker was setting up a ladder beside my seat to check the ceiling, and it took about two minutes of apologizing between us before we reached the understanding that neither of us was in the other's way.

Why is Brent Easton Ellis's "Less than Zero" the carry-on book I brought along for flying today? Because Georgette Heyer's "The Grand Sophy" was bigger and heavier.
A picture of a trade paperback book that reads BRENT EASTON ELLIS (the author's name) in big, yellow letters, while the actual title "Less than Zero" is in much smaller letters covering the eyes and mouth of an underexposed photo of a human man.

Waiting for my plane to leave today, I realized the easy listening piano instrumental they were playing seemed familiar. After a moment, I realized it was Taylor Swift's "Style." It was followed by slow piano versions of "Africa" and "Smells like Teen Spirit."

I remember years ago there was a macro that would change any use of "the cloud" to "somebody else's computer." Maybe we need that for AI algorithms too.

The funniest thing about Rolling Stone complaining about people not knowing modern music is that I came of age in the late 80s and early 90s when Rolling Stone was about 50 % or more Boomer nostalgia for the 60s.

I've discovered a short-lived British show from the 80s called The Collectors. It's a procedural, except the characters work for Excise and Customs, so most of the crimes are things like smuggling wine from France on the ferry or farmers using their tax-discounted fuel for their personal vehicles.

in my talk today, as an example of the strange things you can do in comics given their sequential but also spatial/simultaneous nature, I included this gonzo panel from 1950s Batman, which I just love in all its weirdness! Yes, I have more intentionally clever examples, but something about this...
part of a page from a batman comic. In one panel, batman leaps from off panel onto a diving board, the motion lines of his rebound travel across to another panel, where we see him finish his leap and crash into the crooks to save the day

Title: Gentlemen! Are you in want of a wife? Allow our algorithm to assist!

Image: a series of yes/no questions for that lead to different outcomes.

Questions include “are you rich?”, “are you dashing?”, “are you a rake” and “are you a vicar?”

Outcomes include “You win the most beautiful daughter of the richest man in the county!”, “You remain a bachelor”, “You marry a dowdy cousin” and “You rescue a 23-year-old from Spinsterhood”.

This is indeed an insane stunt. Gerrit Graham was Beef from Phantom of the Paradise. The Q bored with life on Voyager. An angry clown outside the opera on Seinfeld. He's been in lots of stuff you've seen but probably didn't choose because of him: one of those character actors who always helped.

Which is funnier: that some Wikipedia editor had to figure out Herbie's gender, occupation, and nationality for the character box, or that some Wikipedia editor felt it was important to add those fields?
A picture of Herbie, the love bug. He is a white Volkswagen Beetle with red and white stripes and the number 53. The Wikipedia character box gives his gender as "male," his occupation as "racing car," and his nationality as "German-American."

"They're not misunderstanding the film; they're co-opting a message"
Screencap from the interview linked in the quoted post

Marlow Stern (the interviewer): You have one of the most renowned replies in Twitter history. Elon Musk tweeted out, “Take the red pill,” then Ivanka Trump enthusiastically wrote, “Taken!” to him, and then you replied, “Fuck both of you.” I’m curious how you feel about the co-opting of “The Matrix” by those on the right who don’t really seem to understand its messaging.

Lilly Wachowski: I mean, I can’t sit in a room and explain the movie to every single person who watches it. Even if I did sit in a room with Elon Musk and Ivanka Trump — yikes — it doesn’t matter. They’re not misunderstanding the film; they’re co-opting a message. And that’s what fascists do: They co-opt the messages of progressives and use it to their benefit to confuse and obfuscate what is going on and the intention of their ideology. They do it with everything. They do it with Martin Luther King Jr. Look at how they’ve changed the idea of what antisemitism is.
