Bromley's leafy (and not-so-leafy) streets would be vastly improved by safer routes for cycling. It's bewildering that we have *so many* young families across the borough, yet the infrastructure that would allow children to safely ride a bike down their street, or to school, is barely existent 🤷‍♂️

With our kids now #BackToSchool, never forget that we ARE the traffic that we’re afraid of. If more kids walked, biked or rode transit to school, it would erase a LOT of car trips each day, and our kids would be safer, healthier and better at school as a result. HT Ian Lockwood. Spread the word.
Cartoon of a mom and dad with a kid in front of a minivan. The parents are saying “there is too much traffic for Billy to walk to school, so we drive him.” The caption at the bottom says “traffic inducing traffic.” Let kids walk and bike to school, and tell your leaders to make that trip safe and enjoyable for kids and families. #LetKidsWalk #LetKidsBike

The Borough of Beckenham was granted its Charter in 1935 and would survive for another 30 years before it (together with four other councils) was replaced by the London Borough of Bromley. Croydon Road Rec was the centre of the 1935 celebrations - a location later associated with David Bowie…
The cover of the Charter Celebration book has an interesting modern design. It is divided into two section - one green and one white (the latter looking a little grey with age). The dividing line is roughly on the diagonal although the border between the green and white sections is a meandering line. At the top of the white sections are a collection of green circles, looking a bit like champagne bubbles rising upwards.

The cover features the coat of arms (in green and white) which straddles the two blocks of colour. “1935” is written among the bubbles of the white section, while the rest of the title is on the green section. The title is:

Beckenham High Street in #Bromley could be immensely more people-friendly if we didn't give so much of the pavement space to parked cars. Is al fresco dining actually nicer with an SUV parked right in front of you? #streetsareforpeople #Beckenham

Greater London has 800 #SchoolStreets and a target of 1,000 by 2030. Yet, the borough of Bromley has only *three* in operation. As schools resume next week, that means ~55,000 children and young people travelling to school across Bromley will be faced with more dangerous streets and polluted air.

Nobody disputes that having access to a car in a car-dominated society is good. It gives one access to jobs, healthcare, food, education, social opportunities and more. All we're asking is for people to go one step deeper and ask why access to such basic rights requires buying and operating a car.

Bromley Council can apply for TfL funding (known as LIP funding) for schemes to improve road safety. For the 2025/6 year, £1.7m was allocated to Bromley. Yet, their proposals for 2026/7 only ask for £105k for cycling, covering Bikeability training and new cycle parking. This doesn't go far enough!

8.30am on Beckenham High Street during Easter Break. You'd hardly know it's the morning rush hour! This shows how much car traffic comes from school travel. If our streets were genuinely safe for parents & children to walk & cycle, we could permanently reduce traffic for safer streets & cleaner air

While other London boroughs have been getting on with investing in traffic filters, school streets & cycle lanes, which are *proven* to make streets safer... Bromley Council resolutely ignores residents' demands to tackle speeding & high traffic volumes www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
Text reads: Residents in south-east London have said the authorities have done nothing to stop speeding cars despite sending police more than a thousand reports of vehicles breaking the limit.

People living on Siward Road and Godwin Road near Bromley town centre said drivers use their roads as short cuts.

The residents said there were eight accidents there between 2024 and 2025, including a pedestrian being knocked over, and want traffic calming measures such as chicanes, road narrowing and planters to be installed.

The Met Police said traffic calming was a council responsibility, but Bromley Council said those roads were not a priority for further action as no one has been injured in collisions recently.
