The Free Press bravely challenging the orthodox belief that film criticism should involve watching the film.
A headline from Bari Weiss’s The Free [sic] Press:

“Hold Your Applause for the New Gaza Documentary

There may yet be hard truths in 'NAZA,' including evidence of Israel's systemic failures. But the reporting around it treats flimsy claims as proof of criminality.”

First line: “i haven't seen the film,”

I've worked with students who have incredible art skills who don't allow themselves to follow through in pursuing a career (or even just what excites them) in art. It's not always a skill issue. 🧵

FOURTH REPORT: Former Alpha School students speak out I have just posted my latest report on what student life is *really* like at Alpha School, based on interviews with several student sources. They describe anti-patterns, rocket ships & pirate ships, and "getting nuked." Here's a short summary.

My latest cartoon for Guardian Books. #books #ghost
Panel 1: A man finds a ghost reading a book and says "I thought you’d died?". The ghost replies "My Life has ended but I cannot pass over to the spirit realm when so much remains undone."

Panel 2: The man says "You mean all those books you bought and never got around to reading?". The ghost turns to look at bookshelves piled high with books and says "It won’t take long. There are fewer distractions when you’re dead."

Panel 3:
A few months later...
The man says "Is it me, or are the piles getting bigger?"
(there are indeed more books than previously)
"My Library card still works!" says the Ghost happily "But once I’ve read these I’ll start on the ones in the attic."

The Arthur C. Clarke Award @clarkeaward.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
Some scams are easier to spot than others. That said, we get these semi-regularly and they are only getting more focused and custom-tailored, so be careful writers! And, no, we didn’t reply, but it was super-tempting.
Text from a scam email message which reads:

Hi Arthur C. Clarke,

I recently came across 2001: A Space Odyssey, the 25th Anniversary Edition, and wanted to reach out.

I’ve been connecting with authors whose books are available to readers but may not be reaching as many new audiences as they could.

I’m curious how has your experience been with book visibility and reaching new readers? And have you considered exploring new ways to promote your book or expand its reach to additional platforms?

I’d genuinely be interested in hearing your thoughts and experience.

The most absolutely massive flex from the state fair exhibit. This quilt is made of 40 years of prize ribbons from various categories at the New Mexico State Fair won by Carol St. Clair Johnson. She also won a prize for this quilt.

satin ribbons

After unexpectedly winning her first blue ribbon for a sewn cape in 1981, Carol St. Clair Johnson developed an enduring love for the New Mexico State Fair. The quilt Fair New Mexico-41 Fair Years incorporates more than six hundred of the ribbons she won at the fair every subsequent year except 2020 (when the fair was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Johnson earned ribbons for needlework, knitting, crochet, pies, cookies, cakes, canning, jewelry, flowers, vegetables, and potted plants. The title of the quilt is a reference to the state song, and the design places the state's Zia sun symbol at the center. The quilt earned Johnson yet another ribbon: Best in Category (miscellaneous quilt) at the 2023 New Mexico State Fair.

What matters is that 35 years ago, on August 24, 1991, Ukraine did not simply declare its independence from the USSR and finally become a separate country. It restored its statehood and independence first proclaimed in 1917–1918 — and drowned in blood by Lenin’s Bolsheviks.

In this black and white photo, I’m dressed up in black tie (although no actual tie) ready to go to a fancy event. My suit was hired.
This may be the most handsome photo of me that there is, which is why I’m happy to share it. A workout photo, taken 25 July this year. I’m wearing a vest. I have a small moustache and fairly large biceps.

"doesn't understand the appeal of patina" feels like neat summation of American aesthetics
A BBC story headline reads: "Worth $5M? Visitors react to renovated Washington horse statues." There are two photos. One from 2013 that shows the horse statues in their older, patina state. And one from 2026 that shows them covered in 23.75-karat gold leaf.
