Sharp rise in incidents of AI escaping users’ control, research finds
Exclusive: Number of times AI lies, ignores instructions and pursues goals in harmful ways almost doubles in July Incidents of AIs escaping users’ control to lie, ignore instructions and pursue goals in harmful ways have hit a new high, according to research that also suggests the severity of deception and misalignment is worsening. Analysis of real-world loss of control incidents involving AI models flagged by businesses and individuals almost doubled in July compared with June, with more than 300 cases in the month, according to the Loss of Control Observatory, which monitors reports made by AI users on the social media platform X. I'm struck by how genuinely beneficial / public interest uses of AI are arising from applying classic machine learning, not LLMs. For example, assisting surgeons: www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

There should also be a web based archive of all the messages, so you could verify if a message was legit. Maybe you even access that through an app if you wished.

GDS, AI and the missing theory of the digital state
Two years after digital, data and AI were brought together, the settlement is being dismantled. What does that tell us about the state Britain is trying to build?

Yeah I think the thing with DSIT is, if you're taking over halfway through a Parliament a big question to ask is "is it completely impossible to work with the structure that already exists?"

Given we had a pretty major reshuffle last September a number of departments are about to get their third secretary of state in just over two years. Maybe there’s a reason prime ministers find it hard to get much done.

One of our favourite nature facts is that a group of ladybirds is called a 'loveliness'. 📷 Rob Coleman
Close-up photograph of a cluster of bright red ladybirds with black spots gathered on the sloping wooden surface of a bug hotel or stacked logs. Around 30-40 ladybirds are resting together in a sunlit triangular recess between weathered pieces of wood, with warm natural colours and shallow depth of field creating a softly blurred background.

Monday mood: this Wren. #MondayMotivation 📷️ @aintright.bsky.social
A tiny Wren stands on a cushion of bright green moss, facing the camera. Its round, fluffed-up body, tiny beak and direct stare give it a determined, slightly grumpy expression.

You look like you need a Puffin. Have a Puffin. 📷️ Sue Wood
A brightly coloured Puffin stands on a rocky ledge, framed by a cheerful spray of daisies and wildflowers. With its orange feet planted firmly and beak slightly tilted, it looks like it’s posing proudly for the camera, as if it knows it’s just brightened up your scroll.

Example: Today was time to renew my breakdown cover - my current provider quote was expensive. In the end I've had to get a quote somewhere else. I then call the current provider, waste time in their phone system to talk to a human, who can immediately offer me a 30% discount to stay. Same next year

Someone will tell me I just need to accept market forces and the need for businesses to make profit. But I struggle with the model of defaulting to trying to charge your existing customers much more then you need to

Ben Holliday @benholliday.com · 14/07/2026
We live in such a strange modern world of admin burden where you have to get quotes and negotiate the best price every time you renew something like car/house insurance, or a phone contract. I can't help feeling there's a much better way than all those wasted hours we all spend doing this

I’m quite unconvinced on this. Either a 30-35 page form is actually collecting necessary information - in which case I’d rather it wasn’t filled in using transcription software - or it isn’t, which in case cut down the form.

I've seen this shared with quite a lot of optimism this week giftarticle.ft.com/giftarticle/... and my unsolicited advice is that, given we are not a tech super power, the best approach is to design UK tech and AI policy so that it plays a role in delivering the society Burnham wants to shape
