Gave my talk, and had a marvelous time hearing about some outstanding science, especially the intriguing integrations of graph and network theory and predicting marine population dynamics in the face of global change. Lots to think about.

Did you know Benjamin Franklin discovered the Gulf Stream? In 1769, Franklin’s Gulf Stream chart was printed—the first map of the oceanic current ever published. Two more editions followed, but the original map disappeared for nearly 200 years. Learn how it was found: go.whoi.edu/Franklin

A shocking new poll result: Many Americans somehow don't have a favorite dinosaur. And only 6% give the correct answer (triceratops). Check out YouGov's new polling on Americans and dinosaurs: yougovamerica.substack.com/p/whats-your...
A split bar chart of YouGov polling data with the headline: "Americans are most likely to say T. Rex is their favorite dinosaur, but many don't have a favorite."

The chart has the sub-headline: "Which of the following is your favorite dinosaur? (%)."

The chart has the note: "Note: "Other" includes responses of archaeopteryx, spinosaurus, plesiosaur, ankylosaurus, allosaurus, parasaurolophus, dilophosaurus, diplodocus, iguanadon, and pachycephalosaurus, as well as responses of "other." We know pterodactyls and plesiosaurs aren't dinosaurs. Opinion about dinosaurs comes from the question, "How much do you like or dislike dinosaurs?""

Dewey Mears took this moody, atmospheric photo of Austin's Congress Avenue in 1947. It's almost film-noirish, isn't it? I wonder what it was like to walk down the sidewalk when Austin was a normal, quiet town. 😉 From the Austin History Center, a great place to visit if you're in downtown Austin.

Now including ocean stripes. 🌊 journals.ametsoc.org/view/journal... H/t @heatmap.news.
Fig. 2.
Warming stripes for the surface and ocean depths (1960–2024) and for different layers of the atmosphere (1979–2024). Anomalies relative to the 1981–2010 period are shown, with different color scales for the stratosphere, troposphere, upper ocean, and deeper ocean, with these layers separated by the gray horizontal lines. The global surface temperature data are from HadCRUT5. Global average temperatures for tropospheric layers are from RSS, with stratospheric layer global temperatures updated from Steiner et al. (2020). Ocean data are from Met Office Statistical Ocean Reanalysis (MOSORA) (Smith and Murphy 2007), globally averaged for different depth levels.
