Warmer waters in the Bering Sea caused snow crabs to crash. Now, scientists are racing to predict the future of the lucrative fishery. Learn more: scim.ag/4hrUVwG
Graphic with two parts. Panel 1 is a map of the Bering sea, showing that the cold pool was much smaller between June and August of 2018 and 2019 than it was on average during the summer from 1993 to 2013. The map also shows the area of an annual survey of the snow crab population, which intersects partially with the cold pool. Panel 2 shows two line graphs comparing the average cold pool area with the snow crab population from 1992 to the early 2020s. The cold pool area dropped to its lowest point in summer 2018, and the snow crab population plummeted the following year.
