I'd feel maybe not 10x better if OpenAI were truly an open altruistic organization operating for the benefit of humanity rather than concentrating wealth and power ever more into a handful of lucky rich. But at least sqrt(10)x better.

Educational software was the original co-op. The Minnesota Educational Computing Consortium (MECC) started in 1967, buying a mainframe to timeshare between school districts. They made lots and lots of educational software. You’d know them for Oregon Trail.

I wonder if a coop model like @waldo.net has talked about before could work for something like this.

NJ Transit released a new GTFS static data source that as far as I can tell is just completely incompatible with their GTFS-RT feed. There is no documentation or upgrade path or recommended replacement, it just suddenly doesn’t work! And the old static file schedule ended on May 1. It’s a mess.

This composition had eluded me for nearly a decade, but yesterday I was finally able to capture it. A train rolled through just as the Duquesne Incline was crossing over the tracks in #Pittsburgh, creating a picture perfect winter scene. It was worth the hours and hours I've waited over the years.

Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln's Lyceum Address:

How then shall we perform it?--At what point shall we expect the approach of danger? By what means shall we fortify against it?-- Shall we expect some transatlantic military giant, to step the Ocean, and crush us at a blow? Never!--All the armies of Europe, Asia and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth (our own excepted) in their military chest; with a Buonaparte for a commander, could not by force, take a drink from the Ohio, or make a track on the Blue Ridge, in a trial of a thousand years.

At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.

Ultimately, and this is something that I can only put out now as a provocation, I think that the real reason we are seeing a fundamental restructuring of the existing episteme, and its institutions from the university to institutions of scientific research, is that knowledge is increasingly incompatible with capital. It is telling us that our society, one which focuses on the wealth of the few at the expense of everyone, is unsustainable, unbearable. That the planet, our social existence, and even our individual health cannot be sustained under capitalism. This is America. When knowledge gets in the way of profits, destroy knowledge.

One of the defining feelings in American life, for decades now, is elites doing plainly criminal shit and nothing at all happening as a result. It is deranging in a way that virtually nothing else is. Media fixates on perceived street lawlessness but shit like this matters much more in my opinion.

Hello, Jon.

This is Spotify headquarters. Although this presentation is typically automatically generated, we find these circumstances so extraordinary that we felt the need to reach out to you with a personal message. We have found that while you did listen to rap music this year, you listened to country music as well. This is a music listening pattern of such rare precedent that we were compelled to disconnect our servers, lest our algorithm crash them entirely upon attempting to categorize your tastes. You are the most interesting person we have ever encountered, and we wish the incurious blockheads who make up the remainder of our subscriber base shared not only your adventurous spirit, but fearless authenticity. We have your banking information on file. As a token of our appreciation, $5,000,000 USD will be deposited into your account immediately.

Thank you for everything, Jon.
