I think people chafe at the packaging of the sound as well as the “simplicity” of the lyrics. But even that is part of aging. I used to be way more flowery and dramatic in my prose when I was younger. Even when it was good writing, going through it and getting to the other side changed my own voice.

One thing that really bothers me about the entire discourse around The Life of the Showgirl is that almost all of these songs (og and deluxe) are ones that could only be written after YEARS of adulthood and self reflection. And yet there’s this persistent narrative that it’s cheap and juvenile.
