her name was kitty … 🧡 Happy birthday showgirl by the amazing @alefvernon.bsky.social

Another wonderful design by alef Vernon celebrating the one year birthday of the life of a showgirl. In the center of a theatric stage, Taylor Swift, dressed as a showgirl stands under a spotlight, roses and confetti with a banner above her that says happy birthday show, girl. She is wearing an orange bodysuit, feather boa, and a feather in her hair while looking off the side. The other sisters are standing in the balconies around her with lover midnights and folklore in the top left balcony debut fearless in 1989 in the bottom, left balcony. Speak now, evermore and read in the top right balcony and reputation and tortured poet in the bottom right balcony. On the ceiling, there is a mock drawing of the creation of Adam with two Taylor Swift one as showgirl and one as midnights.

there are moral arguments against the death penalty in its ideal form but in real life you never need to get there. the prior question is "can the state be trusted to end the life only of the rightly convicted without torture?" and the answer is no

it’s horrible no matter what, but it makes me extra sad because 1) she was 18 when she did it, 2) she was 1 of 3 who committed the murder, yet she’s the only one who got the death penalty, 3) the state botched a lethal injection earlier this year and still insisted on doing this one

“A lawyer for Christa Pike said executioners have administered two syringes of lethal injection drugs to Pike but that she remains alive and breathing.” It’s been over an hour.

tennessee hasn’t executed a woman in the state in 200 years - that may be where you got that

I think people chafe at the packaging of the sound as well as the “simplicity” of the lyrics. But even that is part of aging. I used to be way more flowery and dramatic in my prose when I was younger. Even when it was good writing, going through it and getting to the other side changed my own voice.

One thing that really bothers me about the entire discourse around The Life of the Showgirl is that almost all of these songs (og and deluxe) are ones that could only be written after YEARS of adulthood and self reflection. And yet there’s this persistent narrative that it’s cheap and juvenile.
