I got to Copenhagen this morning and have been biking around all day and, y'all, I don't know if you've heard about this, but ... this place has pretty good bike infrastructure. You read about it but it's still just mind-blowing to see. Swarms of bikes, everywhere. Swarms!

Reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels, or just the liquid fuels traded at the global market (where some supply is intermittent and causes prices to spike) will reduce the vulnerability to price hikes. And reduce greenhouse gas emissions as well. :-)

The honest answer is: it depends on what you measure, and where you look.

Aaahh, well of course, haha. That is not the math most people agreed on to call math. It is very sad to see people use a tool (here math) completely wrong, without realising it themselves, but instead telling a wrong story far and wide.

Why is it important to move the energy as hydrogen rather than methane, for which there is an existing grid of pipelines. Is it overall cheaper or more efficient to refurbish and old pipe systems and make new pipelines, rather than invest in the process equipment to make methane with electricity?

Exactly because "heat is heat", it is a matter of emitting just as much heating power into a building, as seeps out of it, to maintain a given temperature. (adding heat faster, will raise the room temperature) Any heat source that can at least match the heat loss, will be fully able to keep up.

Nikolai Beier @beiernikolai.bsky.social · 12/04/2026
Regardless of insulation of a houses you want to heat, it is worth choosing the most efficient heat source. That will be a heat pump, that takes most the heat from the air or soil just outside and only need 20 to 35 % of the delivered heat to come from electricity. No heat load/loss is too big.

EU’s energy problem is bigger than one fuel, one route, or one crisis. Since 1973 several shocks has hit. And the dependency has changed from Soviet to Russia to now the middle East and North America. The structural issue is import dependency. In 2025, the EU’s energy import dependency was ~60%. 👇

Well, the lowest running costs comes with an optimised heating system, based on heat pumps. (Running costs gets even lower with a solar system that can deliver part of the electricity.) Buying a new gas boiler comes with a big risk of yet an other price shock.

Affording heat pumps. Many installers get better to figure out how few parts will need to be changed or added, to make a heating system work well in a given house. And then present a trade-off between installation cost and running costs. Going for extra belts and braces will increase the cost.

Plenty many *new* cars are sold each year. Whomever makes those purchases, seems to have a choice. If money are tight, a used electric car is likely a better deal than a new petrol car, given lower running costs. Cars in general are an expensive way to transport persons. Biking is cheaper.

The sudden price jumps of petrol, diesel & methane gas are due to wars and violent events, thaw we cannot control directly. But the people buying new cars, can choose one powered by electricity. When a gas/oil boiler breaks down beyond repair, the owner can choose the replacement to be a heat pump.

Nikolai Beier @beiernikolai.bsky.social · 12/03/2026

Udstyret var her allerede. For nogle år side kunne træ+gas alene dække el-nettets spidslast. Nu falder motor-kapaciteten.
