This is a data (non-)availability statement from here www.nature.com/articles/s41... I understand one may have strong opinions about what should be done with data. Still, I think this has no place in a data availability statement because this is not up to the authors to decide. 1/
Data availability from article reading:
Access to deidentified participant data may be available to researchers who provide a statistically coherent proposal to the corresponding author, beginning 9 months after publication, for 36 months. By ‘statistically coherent’, we mean that the data requested might reasonably be expected to answer the question asked (either alone or in aggregate with other datasets) with a reasonable chance of statistical precision.

🌡️ New #JAERE research asks: how well do common temperature proxies (nearest monitor, PRISM) match true station readings? Not well — the resulting biases range from -30% to +300% in a temperature–crime application, and fixed effects can make the bias worse 📉 #JaereFigureFriday 📈 #Econsky
👉 Figure 1 breaks the error into its three sources — using the nearest monitor instead of your actual location (row 1), computing the daily mean as (max+min)/2 instead of hourly averages (row 2), and sorting temperatures into bins (row 3) — and then combines them (row 4). In short, the proxies squeeze the extremes toward the middle — hot days read too cool 🔥⬇️, cold days too warm ❄️⬆️. The models built to detect extreme-temperature effects (binned regressions, splines) suffer the most, since that's where the errors are biggest.

Knowledge Spillovers, Competition, and Individual Careers
(Forthcoming Article) - Exposure to better peers in the workplace can influence career trajectories through two opposing channels: positively, via knowledge spillovers, and negatively, through competition for advancement. We disentangle these effects by studying untrained labor market entrants and distinguishing between coworkers in the same occupation with whom they are likely to compete versus those with whom they are unlikely to compete. We find robust evidence of persistent knowledge spillovers but also identify countervailing competition effects of comparable magnitude. Both effects are more pronounced for men than for women.

aeaweb.org
The Environmental Bias of Corporate Income Taxation
(Forthcoming Article) - We study the relationship between corporate income taxation and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the U.S. We show that CO2-intensive firms benefit more from the tax advantage of debt, and pay lower income taxes on their capital income. Building on these new facts, we provide evidence that a cut in the corporate income tax rate leads to a larger expansion of clean firms. We develop a multi-sector general equilibrium model that accounts for our evidence and quantify the impact of corporate tax reforms on aggregate emissions. A policy that eliminates the tax advantage of debt could reduce aggregate emissions without affecting GDP.

Remote Work and City Structure
(Forthcoming Article) - Relative to remote work, working downtown facilitates valuable interactions with other in-office workers, but entails commuting costs. The resulting coordination mechanism can lead to multiple stationary equilibria with varying levels of remote work. Temporary reductions in commuters, as in the COVID-19 pandemic, can then lead to persistently large fractions of remote workers. Cellphone- based mobility data for the U.S. shows that commuting trips in the largest cities, which are more likely to exhibit multiplicity, have stabilized at only 60% of pre-pandemic levels, while they are fully back in smaller cities. Cities with permanently low commuting experience average welfare losses of 2.3%.

Shifting Work Patterns with Generative AI
(Forthcoming Article) - We present evidence from a field experiment across 66 firms and 7,137 knowledge workers. Workers were randomly selected to access a generative AI tool integrated into applications they already used at work for email, meetings, and writing. In the second half of the 6-month experiment, the 80% of treated workers who used the tool spent two fewer hours on email each week and reduced their time working outside of regular hours. Apart from these individual time savings, we do not detect shifts in the quantity or composition of workers’ tasks resulting from individual-level AI provision.

The Effect of High-Tech Clusters on the Productivity of Top Inventors: Comment
(Forthcoming Article) - Moretti (2021) reports a positive elasticity between technology cluster size and patenting, and uses an event study and instrumental variables regressions to justify a causal interpretation. The event study does not use the variation generated by inventors moving across cities, and the instrument is constructed incorrectly due to a coding error. I run a corrected event study and fix the coding error, and find null effects. The reported elasticity may not be causal.

Forthcoming in the JEL: "The First 1,000 Days and Beyond: The Process of Child Development" by Orazio P. Attanasio.
aeaweb.org
The First 1,000 Days and Beyond: The Process of Child Development
(Forthcoming Article) - This paper reviews recent research in the economics of human development, focusing on the early years of life as a critical period for shaping long-term outcomes. Early childhood development is inherently multidimensional: cognitive and socioemotional skills evolve dynamically and interact with health, nutritional, and environmental influences. Economists have contributed to this field by providing a conceptual and unifying framework that highlights how key drivers of development reflect the choices of individuals operating under both incentives and constraints. The paper emphasizes two central challenges: understanding the interactions among multiple dimensions of development and identifying causal links, particularly the effects of different inputs at different ages. Measurement issues are a recurring theme, given the difficulty of assessing young children and the need for comparability across contexts. By discussing early childhood interventions in both developed and developing countries, the paper also stresses these issues’ policy relevance for poverty reduction and social mobility.
