I think Polanski’s days as leader of the Greens are numbered. He’s either going to cling on as they plunge in the polls and be eventually forced out. Or he’s going to serve as a human shield for the crank takeover until the Greens completely implode and he quits. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Oh, yes. I do agree with Trump here. These attacks are not equal. russia commits genocide by trying to freeze Ukrainians in winter, causing millions of civilian deaths. Ukraine attacks a russian war machine to make this war end. So why does Trump side with the perpetrator?

A Green Party source has responded to earlier comments from Caroline Lucas on the party's motion at its conference over the weekend.
They say: "There are ups and downs in politics and when people are passionate they disagree in the heat of a campaign."
The source adds: "We do things differently, unlike Labour who use anonymous sources and resort to factionalism."

I don’t think that’s a good thing at all. It’s going to be devastating for trans-people. It’ll probably continue to be devastating for Palestine. It’ll be catastrophic for the Greens as a credible party and vehicle for those rightly disaffected by Labour.

Their ability to be a conscientious counter-force to Labour’s courting of the far-right will effectively be at an end. Burnham can now simply dismiss the Greens as being hollowed out by the cranks who were kicked out of Labour. Presenting them as a party of antisemites and conspiracy theorists.

If Polanski looses the Holborn by-election and the public hears about the Zionism is Racism vote, the more the Greens are going to start to implode. Especially if the Lib Dems can convince their more nimby members to join them. It’ll be Your Party redux.

What does it mean to be a member-led party when the Greens have 230,000 members but only 1835 voted on the Zionism Is Racism motion? Doesn't seem like you can claim the result as the iron-clad democratic will of the membership while dismissing the concerns of actual democratically elected MPs

It probably didn’t help that the Greens direct democracy model hasn’t been pressure-tested by entryism until relatively recently. Thats not to say they weren’t warned though. The last year has given them plenty of time to understand what they were dealing with.

My pet theory on this is because the Greens had already done the hard work and established a functional party-political machine and credible brand. It’s a lot easier for cranks to co-opt an existing party than create a new one. Especially if the old figurehead (Corbyn) and his project had failed.

Amendment 3 sought to include that the motion should not be used to “pressure, proscribe or discipline members based on affiliation with Jewish community institutions” - which had the support of party leader Zack Polanski. This amednment was voted down: 684 votes in favour 1026 votes against
This motion shall not be used to pressure, proscribe or discipline members based on affiliation with Jewish community institutions, such as synagogues, community centres or denominational groups, that describe themselves as Zionist or used to discipline or sanction Jewish members for expressing views that would be non sanctionable if expressed by non Jewish members (such as support for a binational state, or two state solution).

The "zionism is racism" motion that has just passed on the Green Party's conference floor is truly gross, and deeply racist. The party's MPs deserve some credit for opposing it, though they should've done so more stridently and sooner. This is now a millstone around the party's necks. Deservedly.
