It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.
X post from AI industry insider Alvin Sng :

My wife: Can you read our baby a book?
Me: I can just play an audiobook from my phone.
My wife: But then it won't be in your voice.
Me: I can train a voice model.

How do we write histories of small towns in the post-1945 period? Towns such as Halifax in the Calder Valley feature little in an otherwise thriving historiography of contemporary Britain. Yet for an earlier generation of social historian, most notably E. P. Thompson, who wrote The Making of the English Working Class while living there, such towns were crucial to understanding the processes of industrialisation and capitalist modernity. How can we include such places in more purposeful narratives of the more recent past? How do we write inclusive histories of belonging for the residents of these towns that do not consign them to being ‘left behind’, as though their histories are only considered to explain their ‘unmaking’ and marginalisation: towards an overdetermined present of post-Brexit Britain, flags and Reform?

The big but hidden impact of the implosion of smaller regional universities is the pressure on research academics to prioritise teaching or switch to teaching contracts and abandon research as a frivolous pursuit in this financially unstable crisis. This will dramatically shrink future scholarship.

a) 'it is no bad thing' if universities close ❌ - think about who they employ and what they offer local area and people. b) Cap on fees should go ❌ - wrong cap: cap on numbers at each institution would help. c) Cost of student loans is often borne by public money ✅ - so get rid of fees altogether!
