It's #CleanAirDay - & on 5 July, the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Clean Air Act. In this letter, a TB patient describes his experience of the 'Great Smog' of 1952, estimated to have contributed to 12,000 deaths in London - unable to move “owing to the exertion of breathing…trying to hold onto life”
Section of a handwritten letter in blue ink, reading 'I would like to render you a report of my health, as I think one id due about October. Well I am very pleased to say that I have survived an alarming experience during the last 3 days + nights of 'Fog'. I was totally incapable of raising my body to an upstanding position or for that matter moving a limb owing to exertion of breathing or shall I say trying to hold on to LIFE. Well it is all over now thank God. My doctor has prescribed the necessary medicine and recommends a fluid diet. But I don't want to undergo such an experience again without having some remedy...".
From correspondence between patient WA and the Lady Almoner at Frimley [TB] Sanatorium, 1942-1957 [RLHBH/AL/3/27/9]. The patient goes on to make a request for a prescription for a respiratory mask to help with future smog, and a note indicates the Lady Almoner has requested a Burney Yeo inhaler (mask) for WA from the dispensary at the Brompton Hospital.

The caption for Hockey's application to train as a nurse reads as follows: "Having fled Austria due to the Nazi invasion in 1938, Lisbeth Hochsinger (later Hockey) applied to train as a nurse at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel - one of the few hospitals which accepted refugee probationers. Hochsinger was dismissed from her post in 1940 when the Home Office temporarily withdrew permission to employ 'alien students'. Hochsinger lost both her parents in the Holocaust and was not alone in later choosing to anglicise her surname after the Second World War."

In last night's episode of Our Hospital Through Time we showed an example of Lister's Carbolic Acid Spray. In this photograph you can see how it was used to mist disinfectant over the patient during a surgery at St Bartholomew's #HistMed #History #Archives
Black and white photograph showing a patient on a ward. Three men wearing three piece suits are at the head of the bed. One is performing surgery on the patient. Another is dropping anaesthetic onto a piece of fabric on the patient's face. A nurse is standing to the right of the men, holding a bowl and sponge. To her right is a carbolic spray positioned to spray over the patient.

[SBHX8/733]Blue background with white text which reads "British surgeon Joseph Lister invented this device to spray disinfectant over the patient and surgeons during operations. He believed it would kill bacteria in the air and stop the patient from getting infections."

There is a photograph showing the spray which comprises a metal cannister (which housed a paraffin lamp and a water tank) with a wooden handle, a glass jar (which would have held the carbolic acid) is mounted to the cannister.

Blue background with white text on it which reads - John Freke (1688-1756), Surgeon and Museum Curator

Appointed assistant surgeon to St Bartholomew's Hospital in 1725. He began to specialise in eye surgeries, becoming one of the first specialists in England. One of his duties as assistant surgeon was to manage the anatomy museum. The museum was mostly made up of kidney and bladder stones. In July 1729 John became the main surgeon to the hospital.

The chandelier, which has his name on it, was given to the hospital in 1735.
