#OTD in 1948, Alice Coachman won the high jump at the London Olympic Games, becoming the first Black woman from any country to win an Olympic gold medal. She cleared 5 feet, 6 1/8 inches--setting an Olympic record (at the time). #OlympicHistory #WomenInSport #Olympics
A side-by-side black-and-white photo compilation celebrates the historic 1948 London Olympics triumph of track and field icon Alice Coachman (1923–2014).

On the left, Coachman stands proudly atop the highest tier of the Olympic podium after becoming the first Black woman to win an Olympic gold medal. She wears a dark, zipped USA tracksuit and looks ahead with a serene, triumphant expression. Flanking her on the lower steps are silver medalist Dorothy Tyler of Great Britain and bronze medalist Micheline Ostermeyer of France. The podium features a large number "1" and stylized Olympic rings. On the right, an action shot captures Coachman mid-air as she clears the high jump bar at her record-setting height of 5 feet, 6 1/8 inches. She is suspended horizontally over the bar in a powerful, dynamic pose, wearing dark long sleeves and light athletic shorts. Below her, official judges in dark blazers and hats watch intently against a blurred backdrop of packed stadium spectators. The overall composition contrasts the explosive athletic feat with the quiet pride of its reward, evoking a deeply inspiring, historic mood.
