Stede is wearing a tight fitting sweater vest over a patterned button up shirt with khaki trousers. Perched on his face is a pair of horn rim glasses and a mildly bitchy expression aimed to the right at Ed.

Ed is outfitted in a curious mishmash of a costume. Resting on his head like space helmet is a large Venus fly trap-like mask with the mouth agape revealing large rows of teeth and Ed’s sheepish smile. #WIPWednesday, and since @citrussyndicate.bsky.social pointed out to me it’s the first day of Whumptober, I figured this is a fitting WIP to share, because I’m bullying Ed. 😭😭😭 So here’s another peek at my BB gold rush/Oregon trail fic! ***CW: talk about drinking too much/depression.***

Life goes on, even if in the most painful way imaginable. Ed can hardly remember the next couple of weeks. He knows they reach Sutter’s Mill, knows he stakes a claim, but beyond that it’s a blur. He’s doing everything he can to forget—every touch, every kiss, every memory of that blonde ray of sunshine—but none of it washes away, no matter how much he drinks.
Stede haunts him. He’s there in Ed’s dreams, in the silence of the camp, in the rasp of the wind through the trees. His voice lingers like smoke, vivid and unavoidable, and it drives Ed to the edge of madness. He doesn’t understand. Why did he leave?
He wants to tear the bracelet from his wrist, throw it into the dirt, crush it under his heel. But he can’t. The thought hurts worse than keeping it. It’s become a double-edged sword; something he both needs to cling to and can hardly stand to see. Once, in a drunken rage, he threw it into the river, only to fling himself in after it, nearly drowning before dragging himself ashore, soaked and shaking, the bracelet clenched in his fist. He vowed then to keep it, not as comfort, but as a reminder never to trust anyone with his heart again.

Then, as if sent to them by a benevolent force in the universe, a little red tow truck covered in Christmas lights with a Christmas tree in the back pulled up next to them.

“You love birds need some help?” The man driving the truck asked, and when he stuck his head out the window Stede’s jaw dropped.

Stede was very happily married, of course, and didn’t really delight in ogling other men, but if you looked up the term Zaddy in the dictionary, surely this man’s photo would accompany the definition. All he could do was nod and then stand there with his jaw agape as Zaddy Claus pulled over and got out of the truck.

“Ho ho ho.” Izzy said under his breath as he sidled up next to him, and Stede was more than inclined to agree.
