This AM, another attack on clean transportation standards from the WH. Here are 3 ways states can step up: ⏩ Build more houses close to stuff people like. ⏩ Support electric trucks/cars. ⏩ New permanent revenue structures for zero-carbon transit. Illinois did this last year, PA and CA are next.

As a former fed who led a rulemaking effort, resisting leadership pressure to turn over decision making to contractors ("embedded staff") was already a fight. AI is going to make this worse. Final rulemaking decisions are frequently about values and accountability, and as the classic saying goes:

Poor conditions and disease forced the removal of 15k inhabitants in the 1950s. A UNESCO designation in 1990s opened the door to restoration🤯

Went for a hike in Soldiers’ Delight Natural Environment Area yesterday with @vexedmuddler.bsky.social. This area is a “serpentine barrens”—an area where the usual central Maryland vegetation does not grow well owing to unusual soil chemistry, leading to a prairie grassland-oak savanna environment.
Photo of a gravelly trail passing through a field of short grass, with only a few trees in evidence. Photo of the exposed serpentine rock, which is part of an older oceanic plate pushed up some 450 million years ago, around the time the Appalachians were formed. A look up the rocky trail later in the evening when the light started to get that golden-hour glow. The leaves of one of the native oaks can be seen overhead at center. A setting sun illuminates a field of (mostly) native sedges and wildflowers. Invasives are a problem everywhere, but only certain plants can adapt well to the unusual soil in this area.
