Essential services shouldn't be left in the hands of the private sector? What kind of heresy is this! How will they generate rents from the rest of us?

Also, for the millionth time: Why does Australia always run net positive migration? With our aging population and critical skill shortages we don't have the right demographics to support our economy. Migrants turn up with degrees and skills and are immediately productive.

Just remember it's wages *expectations* that the RBA is worried about. And poor Ampol had no choice but to charge higher prices and have profits go up 376%. Good thing it only cost the govt $3.3bn to artificially lower petrol prices, no one else had any need of that money...
Charts showing wage, inflation and Ampol profit growth 2025-26

From Wikipedia:

The purpose of a system is what it does (POSIWID) is a heuristic in systems thinking coined by the British management consultant Stafford Beer,[1] who stated that there is "no point in claiming that the purpose of a system is to do what it constantly fails to do".[2] It is used in systems theory, and is generally invoked to counter the notion that the purpose of a system can or should be read from the intentions of those who design, operate, or promote it. When a system's side effects or unintended consequences reveal that its behaviour is poorly understood, then the POSIWID perspective can balance political understandings of system behaviour with a more straightforwardly descriptive view.

This is what the super industry wants us to believe. Super represents residualisation of retirement support & supercharges inequality between those who get lucky in their working life & those who don’t. It’s nice for people who get to minimise tax & sit on a pile of money, but it’s bad for society.

Many who believe that privatised retirement security is good because it “reduces the burden” of the age pension would not agree that subsidising private hospitals and schools with public money to reduce the burden of those crucial public services is a good thing.

And no, this isn’t an endorsement of Pauline Hanson. We would all be better off if people understood that income + wealth taxes, funding public services, sharing resources and redistribution are how we make a better society for all of us.

Slop. My @smh @theage cartoon.
Single frame. Title - instruction: “[place cartoon here - ed]”. Appearance of yellow torn out lined note paper held in place by sticky tape. Text: “The Herald-Sun has this week published an AI cartoon, where previously they might have commissioned one of their (dwindling) stable of artists. And it makes sense. (Not the cartoon.) After all, what is a cartoon, but a picture with a caption and maybe some helpful labels to make a point? In this case, a point the editor who prompted it wanted to make.
I mean, how hard can cartooning be? We would all be doing them if it weren’t for our lack of drawing skill (and some cartoonists aren’t very skilled, let’s face it), and AI means nobody has to pay the outrageous fees that “artists” charge, while they can “borrow” their existing work to train AI. It’s literally a no-brainer!” (Small picture of a brain crossed out) “We can only hope they can keep up the quality, once the AI can only be trained using other AI cartoons.”

the reactionary centrists have found a home on the political compass
political compass issue with authoritarian-libertarian and economic-left economic-right axes.

Authoritarian-left quadrant says: Everything is imperialism except actual imperialism, which is fine.
Authoritarian-right: Everything is genocide except actual genocide, which is fine.
Libertarian-left: Everything is theft except actual theft, which is fine.
Libertarian-right: Everything is slavery except actual slavery, which is fine.

I've added in the center: Everything is cancellation except actual cancellation, which is fine.

It's true that a translation of my book isn't the book I wrote. It's a translation of a book I wrote. That's why my name's on the cover (along with the translator's, I hope). A book "written" by an LLM isn't a translation, it's a set of statistically-likely outputs. There's no author or translator.
