Excerpts from Michael Lewis on DOGE (Guardian article). 1. Gavin Kliger, white nationalist, refused to shake hands with the Black IRS staffer who briefed him on privacy issues. Or pay attention. Kliger now has a defense start-up valued at 1.4B thanks to DOGE. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...
Phyllis, who loved working for Kathleen and saw falling on hand grenades as part of her job, never told her how this one had felt. She knew Gavin had expressed enthusiasm for white nationalists, and he likely knew that she knew. She tried to break the ice by walking in with her hand extended; Gavin stared at it and declined to shake it, though he had shaken the hands of the white men who had offered them. “He was kind of cool towards me,” said Phyllis. Before she could even start the briefing, he said, You know, I’ve heard these rules before at other agencies. Yes, she said, but these rules are different, because no other agency is governed by this privacy law, and this law can get you thrown in jail very quickly. As she walked him through the basics – how you can’t use your personal phone for business, how if you happen to so much as glimpse a form 1040 with someone’s name on it you must avert your eyes – Gavin played on his phone. “He’s multitasking right in front of me, typing and texting,” said Phyllis. “It was, here’s a routine that I must endure.”

NEW ARRIVALS are being supervised by the lurking Menander! Ande is starting to approach some visitors. He's discovered that *everybody* loves him. Place your order via 319-337-2996 or infodesk@thehauntedbookshop.com - We ship! Or stop by 219 N Gilbert Street, Iowa City, 11-6 Central Mon-Sat.
Point of view: you are sitting in a squishy chair, looking down at a cardboard box of books to be unpacked, when suddenly a pale orange tabby cat with big golden eyes pops into lurking position between you and the box. It's difficult to say what his intentions are, because the one ear being slightly shorter than the other means it's challenging to see whether he's triangulating to jump up on your lap, or just waiting to grab your fingers if you reach past him. We're guessing he's around three years old, and he is not done being a kitten, not by a long shot.Oh poetry! Only about 20 books in this picture, but they include several heavy hitters, like Pablo Neruda, Wislawa Szymborska, Ovid, Virgil, and a giant illustrated edition of The Odyssey that has pictures faintly reminiscent of Scary Stories (if you lived through the 1980s, you know which book I'm talking about). Also: Villon, Rimbaud, Pessoa, Simic, Baudelaire, Gioia, Burnside, and our old buddy Walt, whose tarot deck I guess I'm going to tackle.Nonfiction time. Again with the heavy hitters: Sartre, Sontag, Nahman of Bratslav, Hans Kung, Raymond Aron, Georges Duby, Black Elk, Patrick Leigh Fermor, and then a bit of history with emphasis on Germany and America. Oh, and Joseph Campbell, who is apparently having yet another moment.Jigsaw puzzles. We carry a minimum of 300 different 1000-piece puzzles, and we usually have at least 50 different 500-piece puzzles; we also have some 2000, 3000, 64, 100, 250, and 300-piece designs. We're big into the history of art, these hot new circular puzzles (including designs by artists ranging from William Morris to Erin E. Hunter), Edward Gorey, and many other generally eye-catching designs; we try to keep some very family-accessible designs, some brightly colorful ones, and some incredibly maddening images, like that Rothko with only four colors, or the one with eleventy zillion cats. And remember... you're only looking at 10% of what we have in stock.

An important bit of immigration law which is relevant here; there is already a waiver process — Section 212(k) of the INA — by which immigrants who obtain status through fraud that they didn't know about can avoid consequences like losing a green card. So this is *even weaker* than it already seems.
