The arXiv limit
Putting my community service hat on, I thought I would relay an announcement on the an announcement on the arXiv blog that it is introducing a limit on the rate that any individual can submit papers to arXiv. To start with, the limit will be two per month. This limit applies to the submitter, not to all the authors, so I think large collaborations will find a way around it by having different co-authors do the submissions.

I'm obviously biased because I study Mimas (and Herschel specifically), but this little moon really is incredibly interesting and unique. There's a lot we can learn from its cratering record about whether it may actually be a "stealth" ocean world (one whose ocean seems missing at first glance).
Cassini's two highest-resolution views from its 13 February 2010 flyby of Mimas caught the southern half of the crater Herschel and an area to its east. This view is composed of two clear-filter images taken from the raw JPEG website. They were rotated to put north up and their levels adjusted to make the coloration fairly continuous. The interior of Herschel is covered in what appears to be post-formation modification. Credit: NASA / JPL-Caltech / SSI / mosaic by Emily LakdawallaAnother Cassini image, this one from farther away in 2005. Herschel lies on the terminator of Mimas in this image, keeping the entire crater floor in shadow with the exception of the central peak. The overall effect is mildly menacing.

While peptidoglycan (PG) is an essential and near-universal feature of Bacteria, it is largely absent in Archaea. A notable exception is a large clade of methane-producing archaea, which possess a cell wall with a distinct type of PG (also known as pseudomurein) 2/9

"Why would you need more than 32,000 points on a path?" you might ask? Because to make maps and figures from geographic information systems data, GIS software often spits out vector files with paths having that many points. I don't need to *print* that many but I need the file to *open*

Link is irrelevant as quartz is not the stable mineral phase at 500km--it's coesite, and it's quite happy as a solid. Pressure matters *a lot*. (Mantle should be at reducing conditions at that depth though, upper most mantle is oxidized but that changes before the transition zone.)

Lights Out Alert for September 16, 2026 - 4.1 million birds will be migrating through Oregon skies. Dark skies help keep birds safe on their journey to their wintering grounds. Migration is happening now through approximately October 19 -- if you can turn off your lights and draw your blinds every evening during that time period to assist migrating birds, that would be appreciated.

Antarctica is a single plate that extends well into the Southern Ocean, so that pole is never included. North pole is more interesting but consists of an extremely slow spreading center between North America and western Eurasia & a completely cryptic boundary that is undefined with eastern Eurasia.

Here's a North Pole view of the present plate configuration. The dashed lines are cryptic boundaries that accommodate North America-Eurasian convergence over a much, much wider area (so no really defined boundary). From here: link.springer.com/chapter/10.1...
Figure from linked paper showing an overly complicated geologic map overlain on a topographic map centered on the North Pole in polar projection. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge continues, with offsets, basically to Siberia (red line with black arrows pointing away from the line). At that point (the red dashed line) the boundary switches to compression but it is very weakly developed structurally or in terms of active tectonics. The Pacific plate subducts along the western/southern (in Alaska) edge of the North American plate (this figure omits the strike-slip fault along western Canada) and the eastern edge of whatever you wish to call Kamchatka/Kuril/northern Japan.
