Good on you @snell.zone for making this point. Copyright law today is heavily tilted away from the public and toward IP owners, and our reliance on major platforms to host and distribute material makes us beholden to their self-interested, risk-averse, and largely incontestable policies.

I love this so much! At the inauguration, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson wore a distinctive collar adorned with cowrie shells, which are believed to offer protection from evil in African traditions. This choice mirrors the late Justice Ginsburg’s practice of using collars to convey a message.

I’m not too sure about this. There is such a thing as institutional memory. People in any industry for a long time tend to know how to get things done within the confines of the system they’re in. I think I’d rather a professional politician than whatever is happening in the US right now.

Not to mention all the implicit public subsidies enjoyed by private firms in the form of roads and healthcare and education. Seems like it would be hard to be a private firm without public spending.

When hearing talk about the need to protect the Tasmanian salmon industry, just remember this is not a local-owned industry. It is dominated by foreign-owned companies. The profits go offshore, and they don’t pay tax here. But the environmental damage very much happens here.
Charts showing income earned and tax paid by Tassal and Sealord in 2022-23
SEALORD AUSTRALIA PTY LIMITED. Income: $159,915,664; tax paid $0
