Dr T'ana strikes me as the kind of doctor who would have a cigarette, knowing full well how bad they are but not caring because she can just wave a lighted doodad over herself and boom, healed.
screenshot from my ipad showing an illustration im working on of Dr T'ana from Star Trek Lower Decks. she looks introspective with her hand resting in her palm. A stubby cigarette is between her fingers.

Hot take: I don't think social media made people dumber. We've been dumb this whole time. It's just that you used to have to have a job that people sent their dumb letters to, to notice. This made "Engaging with fools" an occupational hazard rather than the 24/7 experience it is presently.

LRT I have a lot of conflicting thoughts and emotions when it comes to what happens to rapists and abusers. I'm not a survivor (though the threat of it always lurks, any time I contemplate going on a date). wildly conflicting thoughts & emotions. but i wanted to RT one person's feelings.

it sucks when you're a victim of sexual violence & are inundated with news stories about rape & commentary from people for whom rape is merely an abstract concept used to debate criminal justice

Windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors have nothing to do with whether or not a character is a self-insert. It is a framework for understanding children's literature and the need for diverse works. It can be applied to adult literature as well, but only within the context of diversity.

Ok, but authorities vary a whole lot in the ratio of “benefit when a good person wields it” to “danger when a bad person wields it.” And since “never elect a bad person again” is not a thing we can seriously count on, we should probably look at those ratios.

The state of the world sucks now, I would argue, because the project of universal liberation from tyranny and deprivation is achievable and now risks falling back into the same old shit because people are panicking over fake problems like immigration and crime. Not because the world is worse.

Left-NIMBYs love to pit welfare state expansion against land use reform, but the latter can 1) can achieve significant poverty reductions 2) without means testing or administrative burdens, and 3) at a net gain for the public budget, which can then be used to expand the welfare state.

All you have to do is read articles in the National Review from the 1950s or 1960s and the way that they talk about the civil rights movement or decolonization in Africa to see a perfectly long-running thread of racism that runs right up to the present.

i am genuinely bewildered by people who say that the rise of white nationalism in the republican party is a response to the "woke left." like, did the woke left cause pat buchanan's 1992 presidential campaign? is the woke left why steve king had a long career in congress?
