Lately, I've seen ableism show up as the idea that people are more worthy when they're "out there in person" making & doing things, rather than "lying around at home" or on a keyboard. This framing ties our value to productivity & devalues people w chronic illness who are homebound

Sorry to hear this. I relate so much. It really does suck and I find it quite upsetting. It sometimes feels like enjoyment of life is something that I watch others having but that I'm too trapped to experience.

About 30,000 autistic ppl in the UK have Type 2 Diabetes, aren't on insulin, & use wearable monitors (CGMs). These save lives for those who don't spot low-sugar events / can't cope with endless painful finger prick tests each day etc. The NHS has removed funding. Now, have to pay ~ £1500/yr. /

ADHD is a significant disability and people with it benefit greatly from treatment (not always medication, but, yes, including medication). ADHD is not laziness, is not moral failure, and is not “minor”.

That is why I would like to explain what is meant by 'spectrum' when we talk about the 'autistic spectrum'.
Sometimes when people think of this word, they think of the autism spectrum as being like this:
Not autistic
Very autistic
A very linear looking 'spectrum', which gives the impression that people range from being
'a little autistic' to 'very autistic'.
Hm. How can you be
'a little autistic'?
It's that vague language
that I always Find confusing. The problem with thinking of the spectrum in this way, is that a perception of an autistic person also becomes linear.
You're only a little autistic, Archie.
Hm. I still don't understand, can you be less vague?
You're able to have a normal conversation with me and act
pretty normal! You're not severely autistic.
Not autistic
Very autistic
...Ano so you see, if someone thinks you're on a 'low end' of this spectrum, this often happens:
Archie you can handle all of this just Fine, you're not that autistic.
Situations,
LACK
'SNART
tight clothing
ROUTENE
Toadsa Call at Conversatils once
DON'T FIDGET BE MOREAh.
ANCTLIKE EVER
How can you be tired? everyone
FiAn!: BUTCONCE
does this every day, you're just being lazy.
nE IN
HARDER ABO
LOXMIORE
INFORMATE
AND LOoK
NORMAL W
DOING IT
Wow you're
STISRWES
PEOPL
being so over dramatic, get over if!
GET
ANG(
Woah, you're more autistic than
I thought.
And if you're seen as being on the high end' of this spectrum-
I'm gonna re-label you on this spectrum...
Since you're very autistic
I don't think you should have a job, just to be safe y'know?
It can lead to some people labeling you as being incapable of doing anything at all.
Not autistic
Very autisticThe spectrum consists of many different
'traits', or ways in which the brain processes information.
Language
•
Some traits create difficulties in every day life.
(hence being diagnosed)
motor skills
Sensory filter
•
Perception
erecutive fuction
But also many traits are useful in every day life.
Each person with autism will have a set of traits all
in different areas of the spectrum.
The areas where they don't have a trait will function no differently to a neurotypical brain, but may be affected by circumstances.
In example, I am good at making
conversation (language). But I get sensory overload in loud and crowded spaces, which then makes conversation very hard for me.

Excellent! I'm really pleased for you. So difficult to get these things off the ground, so it's great that you've been successful in gaining funding. (I used to volunteer with a small charity so I know it's bloody hard work to get funding.)

A5: Sadly not. I've only been abroad a very small number of times so I did have some opportunities to use my learning but I stopped being well enough to travel a while back. There is a language club in my area, but I'm too anxious to go and I feel I've forgotten too much anyway. #AutChat

A4 continued: What didn't help was that my relatives were pretty disinterested while simultaneously making it clear that they'd be extremely disappointed in me and angry if I didn't get good grades. It was a lot of pressure with little support, which made me stressed and anxious. #AutChat

A4: Repetition! Re-reading vocab and grammar guides, handwriting things over and over again and speaking words and sentences numerous times. I think conversing with peers would've helped too, but I was kind of isolated at school, so there wasn't anyone to talk to. #AutChat

A1: I studied 4 languages at school but only 3 to the level of getting a qualification (3 at GCSE and then 2 to A-Level) as the school wouldn't let me choose all 4 languages for my GCSEs. I would like to study languages again, but I just don't have time or mental energy at present. #AutChat

Weird request: we’re looking for a specific monkey teddy. We got this one when our eldest was born and he didn’t care about it until a few months ago and now he can’t exist without it. But we only have one and we want a backup. We have searched everywhere and can’t find it. Any leads appreciated 🙏

Thank you for this important thread with which I very much agree. I found the article disturbing, frankly. I've had my concerns about MIND for a very long time, although despite this I was still shocked by the views expressed in the article. My naivety, I guess.

9/ Government should be careful about where "experience" ends and productive work begins. Once someone does work the business would otherwise pay an employee for, unpaid experience stops looking like social mobility and starts looking like a labour subsidy. Especially after thousands of jobs went.

Thank you. I tried to persuade my GP to reach out to my psychiatrist but she was really pushing the medication she wanted me to take and wouldn't budge, sadly. I'll give the medication a try and we've agreed to check in after 3 weeks. I hope it helps as I'm not functioning well at present.

Feeling very on edge at present. I'm also finding that my typing ability and dyslexia are worse. I start a new medication tomorrow which wasn't the one I wanted (due to its possible side effects) but GP said the one I was more willing to try isn't something that is prescribed in primary care.
