I’ve shared this everywhere but here. If adoption does ANY of these things, even one of them, it’s deeply unethical. #adoptionistrauma
Adoption requires a few things that make the 'cure' just as bad (if not worse) than the 'sickness'.
There is no good reason to:
• permanently sever a child from ALL kin (not just mom & dad), including ancestral history.
• enter a child into a contract they can't consent to and can never revoke, rescind, or annul.
• falsify a child's authentic natal identity and force them to use a fake birth certificate as legal ID.
• brainwash a child into believing that strangers are mommy & daddy.
• put a child in a position of expected gratitude by society.
• raise a child apart from their inherent culture and community.
• offer zero protection for the child to even know they're adopted, which deprives them of their medical history and can lead to accidental incest.
Motherloss, genetic bewilderment, and identity falsification are profound traumas that plenary adoption creates.

given any prevailing social and political climate, there are always hegemonic attitudes that forbid the discussion of certain basic ethical questions, and i believe that the identity crime at the heart of #adoption is one of them—and has been for at least 80 years in the USA.

BREAKING: Here is the anti-trans sex/gender executive order. It's extensive, it's bad, and it's often lawless. www.whitehouse.gov/presidential... And, do not miss in "d" and "e" below, it even tries to put in the beginnings of a personhood argument, for some reason.
Sec. 2. Policy and Definitions. It is the policy of the United States to recognize two sexes, male and female. These sexes are not changeable and are grounded in fundamental and incontrovertible reality. Under my direction, the Executive Branch will enforce all sex-protective laws to promote this reality, and the following definitions shall govern all Executive interpretation of and application of Federal law and administration policy:

(a) “Sex” shall refer to an individual’s immutable biological classification as either male or female. “Sex” is not a synonym for and does not include the concept of “gender identity.”

(b) “Women” or “woman” and “girls” or “girl” shall mean adult and juvenile human females, respectively.

(c) “Men” or “man” and “boys” or “boy” shall mean adult and juvenile human males, respectively.

(d) “Female” means a person belonging, at conception, to the sex that produces the large reproductive cell.

(e) “Male” means a person belonging, at conception, to the sex that produces the small reproductive cell.

A helpful thing to remember, or at least it has been for me: in hard times, there will be discrete moments—maybe lots of them—where you experience love and joy and community. It is no sin to enjoy them, and arguably more of one to refuse them.

just don’t invoke the slogan “love is what makes a family” in connection with #adoption. If that slogan has any meaning, it refers to the reciprocity in the concept of chosen family. Most adoptees never had a choice. There is no reciprocity when you’re trafficked as a baby.

From @kwistent.bsky.social ‘s forthcoming THE SUN WON’T COME OUT TOMORROW, a history of orphanhood in the USA. Adopted people will want to read this book for the way Martin’s analysis connects with the abolitionist emphasis on #adoption as a privatized solution to systemic social harms.
From our first introduction to her, then, Annie's main problem is the hold that mean old Miss Asthma has over her due to her parentless, impoverished state. The solution to her problem is adoption by "nice folks" —people who make the individual decision to share their wealth and love by rescuing a "charity girl" like her. In order to win over those folks, Annie needs to show hope and determination, to be resilient above all. This portrayal of Annie's problem and solution remains constant throughout the many iterations of her story and has twisted our imagined reality of orphanhood for gen-erations. Each time we regurgitate Annie's story, we allow ourselves to believe the orphan's struggle is one with individual causes and individual answers. In doing so, we overlook the systems-economic, religious, political— that have made orphans out of real children like Annie and that continue to control their fates. Our preference to buy into Annie's version of orphanhood at the expense of sitting with actuality speaks to how we as Americans value individualism and fail to grasp the need for societal interventions for systemic harms.

reminder to all #adoptees: No one* is coming to help us tell our stories. If people start to pay attention, it will only be because WE force them to. Speak, write, do research, make art, music, find community. Be visible. People in this adoption-besotted country prefer to look away. Don’t let them.

people who cry “parents’ rights” assume that children are property, objects of dominion; they are asserting their dominion over that of the state. i prefer as a parent to talk about my responsibilities to my children rather than my rights over them, since no human being is another’s property.
