The problem has never really been that conservative voters are reluctant to criticize Trump. The problem is a relentless right-wing media apparatus that tells them Democrats are worse.

we do actually have a bit of a model, in a sense, for accountability after massive abuses: after Willowbrook the federal government permanently funded independent disability rights investigators in every state with unique authority to enter anywhere and mandates to report on abuse publicly

But you can definitely cancel (& where legally appropriate, actually prosecute) leaders while offering a path for GOP voters to rejoin decent society.

You’re not going to learn anything by sitting down to lunch with Kevin Hassett or Peter Navarro, other than they have gone all in on lying & fascism. So again, you need to take a step back & make clear that there are prior assumptions & table stakes antes about who one should sit down to lunch with.

I think we have geriatric Constitution problem, a legacy of white supremacy problem, & a plutocracy & their capitalist media problem. We do not have a people-are-inherently-evil problem. This is what conversations with deluded, privileged, and unreflective GOP voters clarifies.

Like I truly don’t understand how you could have been anywhere in the vicinity of Springfield Ohio even before the election and thought that he’d only go after “criminals.” Trump, Vance, and CO werent subtle in the slightest. I can only really conclude this was a lie the median voter told themselves

I’m more sympathetic to the median voter (derogatory) than most people on here but it seems like the only way you can instill some sense of civic virtue is to shove the consequences directly into their face after the fact

Doesn’t mean rent controls never have any place in housing policy at all, but they have many proven downsides and unless they’re accompanied by big increases in supply they risk making the overall housing situation worse.

There is a certain subset of elite law professors for which no amount of evidence will convince them that Supreme Court justices are not deep thinkers consistently applying some constitutional philosophy. Because there’s been quite a lot of evidence!

The thesis of Feldman’s article is exactly backward. The primary problem with the Court majority is blind adherence to partisanship, picking and choosing whatever interpretive method gets the desired outcome. If they strictly followed any judicial philosophy our situation would be better.

Unpopular opinion: LLMs are generally deradicalizing people whose beliefs are based on pure propaganda. I've been watching this happen slowly with some people I care about. ChatGPT is one of the reasons they finally accept that the NRA, OAN, and NewsMax are lying to them.

Trump's lawlessness is more pressing, but let's not forget: the GWBush admin was also overflowing with incompetent, corrupt Republicans who were pathologically hostile to the rule of law. None of this was necessary or helpful, but it made them feel manly and it was good money for gov't contractors.
“A detainee who is shackled, transported to a former C.I.A. black site, and intentionally kept ignorant of both his right to remain silent and the inadmissibility of his prior coerced confessions, cannot be said to be making an ‘essentially free and unconstrained choice,’” he wrote.

Sort of insane fact about how broken US urban planning is—America now spends more building *just the lights for roads and highways* than on all subways & ground mass transit combined Spending on roadway *pavement* is 18x transit spending

Basically: assimilation is not something immigrants do or don’t do; it’s something US citizens do or don’t do with respect to them. It’s an acknowledgment we can always withhold. It’s power over immigrants that lasts forever.

Yeah my takeaway from MAGA isn’t that we’ve entered bizarre new realms of post-material politics. Rather, I see with fresh eyes how dumb and cruel hierarchs have always been. All of our liberal democratic institutions were a reaction to dumb & cruel hierarchs. And it’s still barely enough.

The most difficult part about attempting to seek truth is that we're more interested in narratives than reality. We'd rather LARP the story we want to be in rather than the story we're actually in. In this particular way, LLMs and humans are more alike than most people want to admit.
