Bradford wants to hire a THOUSAND new cops?! No. Hell, no. On top of gutting revenue with his cuts, he wants to explode the already massive police budget? Toronto, we HAVE to re-elect Olivia Chow. (Also, citing Malcom Gladwell in a serious policy discussion is instantly disqualifying.) #TOPoli

Canada is refusing to issue ISBNs to books primarily generated with AI. This illustrates both the urgency of the problem of the growing flood of slop books, and also the toothlessness of addressing it on the honor system without there also being consequences for lying
Use of artificial intelligence
By registering with ISBN Canada, you declare that your book was created by a human author. You may use AI tools only for limited support tasks, such as brainstorming ideas, checking grammar, or formatting your book. You must not use AI to generate the text, create the artwork, or translate the book. ISBN Canada does not issue ISBNs for works whose content is primarily generated by AI. LAC is currently reviewing its policy regarding the use of AI content creation and our guidance is subject to change.

There’s something intensely American about that, in a good way. These may be hostile weirdos, but they’re hostile weirdos with an aesthetic, and if they have to create it next to a strip mall salon, they will!

Morning (New Yorker cartoon, by Rose Anne Prevec)
A man sits at a restaurant table holding two chips. A woman sitting opposite, with the chips directly in front of her, while he has an empty plate, says “I can't believe how much more relaxed I feel since you told me to calm down.”

I don’t care where you started out on the political spectrum If your kid comes out as trans & you don’t become a rainbow-clad, parade-cheering ally & rock-solid supportive girl/boy/enby dad/mom? You were never a parent at all You were a doll collector furious they didn’t stay in their packaging.

TIL there’s a fish that lives in the lowest depths of the Congo River that has stunted growth, no color pigment, and no eyes. And locally it’s called “mondeli bureau,” which translates to “white man in an office” LMAO
A very small blind pasty white yellowish fish in the palm of someone’s hand. Lamprologus lethops, a fish that lives in the lower Congo River, is pale and blind like fish that dwell in caves deep underwater.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Opened in 1999, the Toronto Music Garden is a fascinating waterfront space inspired by the music of Bach, in collaboration with renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Each dance movement within Bach’s First Suite for Unaccompanied Cello corresponds to a different section in the garden.
Aerial view looking north over Marina Quay West, west of Spadina, ca. late 1990s. A garden and adjacent buildings next to the marina are under construction. Series 1465, File 145, Item 37.Aerial view looking north of Marina Quay West, west of Spadina. The marina is filled with boats, and a landscaped park runs adjacent to the water. Several tall condo buildings and the SkyDome are in the background. Series 2311, File 3084, Item 366. Tri-fold brochure detailing the Toronto Music Garden project with images, descriptions, and park design plans. Text "About the Music Garden" reads: Fronting on Toronto's inner harbour, the 20+ acre Toronto Music Garden is scheduled to open in the spring of 1999. The City of Toronto park is the latest addition to the proposed 40-acre Harbourfront Parks System. The creation of the Music Garden is the results of a unique collaboration between Julie Moir Messervy and landscape architects from the City's Parks and Recreation Division. The park design is inspired by Bach's First Suite for Unaccompanied Cello, with each dance movement within the suite corresponding to a different section in the garden.
