I've talked about the Sameer Project before—an excellent life-saving on-the-ground initiative in Gaza. Since April 2024, they've distributed nearly a quarter of a million meals alone (plus water, medical care, and shelter). But funding has dropped so much that they'll have to shut down without help.

Just like last year, it's important for King County voters to mail ballots in early. How early? Why not today? Due to mail processing delays by Trump's USPS, ballots mailed just before or on Election Day are at rick of not being counted. If you do wait until the last minute, just use a drop box!

Finally got around to watching the final cour of Beastars and…. yeah, just read the manga. I suppose I should be happy that such a weird manga got 48 episodes of anime, but they sure did not stick the landing. I’d say this one’s another point in the “the manga is almost always better” column.

one of my personal pet peeves about japanese translation is when the ～ても construction is translated as "even" every single time. most of the time you can simply delete the "even" from your translation and the sentence will mean the same thing in english

I told my partner that the name of Witch Hat Atelier in Japanese is actually “Pointy Hat Atelier” and showed them とんがり帽子 in the dictionary. Translation is a form of creation. The translator has to make decisions about preserving style over direct content, about cultural equivalence, about how to preserve a sense of pun or sentence structure from one language to the next. People who assume an LLM can do it are not understanding the task.
