This is very long (and needs heavy editing) but is interesting, and is reminding me of the early (human) fMRI stuff on fusiform face area (FFA) also responding to birds, cars, etc. (c.f. Nancy Kanwisher) (circa late 1990s, early 2000s) already-clean.goodfire.com

For example it sometimes refuses some tasks but not with the sorts of relation to its expression of pain that we would expect from experience with humans and animals.

I'm not sure how related it is to OP's ideas nor do I recall if Dennett discussed AI. But I disagree with OP that AI has access to its internal states or displays signs of genuine suffering rather than linguistic content describing it.

Dennett wrote about animal consciousness and suffering in Kinds of Minds : that if it seems like suffering we should treat it as such. An adoption of the intentional stance. He suggested loosening the coupling of unique cognitive capacities with moral consideration in humanist thought.

I am suing the NIH. As part of a class action with the ACLU and 16 other plaintiffs, we are challenging the thousands of unlawful grant terminations in an effort to get them all reinstated. Whatever happens, at the very least, no one can say I sat back and watched while they destroyed science.

Hey @ericlipton.nytimes.com 👋 AI is not “evolving” on its own. *People* are choosing how to build it. *People* are choosing how to train it. *People* are choosing how to run it. Maybe the problem is that they are the *wrong people* to make these choices.

Plenty to reflect about re: the Arday affair, but I'm going to repeat this one thing. The playbook the right used here is effective even though it's not especially sophisticated, as it relies on the audience to do the dirty work. I've been calling it "Trojan horse propaganda", let's go with that. 1/

Tracing the usage of the term "latent" in science is frickin WILD, dude. It looks like it all goes back to (arguably) the start of the scientific method, Bacon's 1620 Novum Organum, in which he discussed the processus latens.

So, I really hope I get to tell this story in longer form in the near future, but it it’s burning a hole inside me. Most of it comes from an interview with Bob Hirst this weekend. Bob has been Exec Editor of the Mark Twain Project for 47 years, before which he was part of its staff for ~15. 1/16

What if the evidence is "witness said killer had brown hair", that is likely if brown haired suspect is the killer. But it doesn't mean all brown haired people are probably guilty.

This is a specific example of the Prosecutor's Fallacy. Given this person is guilty, we would likely observe this evidence vs Given this evidence, it is likely this person is guilty.

-going forward we're gonna need more of your data to make sure it's you

-ahaha youre not gonna believe this but we had a bit of a data breach

-your data is probably for sale online now

-that means someone could easily impersonate you

I'll be at a workshop organized by @rohanalexander.bsky.social next week on how AI will change quantitative social science. This is my short paper, and this is the key argument. ryancbriggs.net/blog/as-ai-l...
Information manipulation is going to get cheaper much faster than interacting with the world will. I expect that this will lead to the bottleneck in research shifting from production to consumption. We should be preparing for this shift now by building infrastructure that allows us to adjudicate claims and filter work in a world where production is cheap. The current journal system is not well positioned to do this, and so we should be experimenting with new institutions that can.

I think the issue is that two claims get conflated: "Statistical learning over massively distributed representations is more similar to neural processing than symbol manipulation is" "Connectionist / Neural Networks / Deep Learning / Transformer models are just like humans"
