Found out yesterday that one of the first pet cats whose name we know belonged to Crown Prince Thutmose of the 18th dynasty pf Egypt. She was named Ta-Miu, which translates, roughly, as "Miaow Girl".

The thing about states committing genocide is that I just don’t think you need to introduce any other language to condemn them, unless it’s not really their genocidal actions you’re primarily seeking to condemn.

Having seen lots of commentary on it, I've finally read the 'Zionism is Racism' motion before Green Party conference. Its main flaws: 1) Badly written 2) Conflates zionism with Israeli Government actions (about as logical as conflating socialism with the USSR) 3) Defines a contested term singularly

I cannot help but notice that leftist groups do not, for the most part, demand that all lefty Catholics only attend churches that dissent from the teachings of the Church hierarchy on abortion and queer rights. They broadly understand that sometimes one has a cultural link to people with bad views.

As an SNP member, we need to remember that we lost the 2024 UK general election. If we had run it as a de-facto referendum, as was suggested and thankfully scrapped, we WOULD HAVE LOST. Please can we stop pushing the idea of WM elections as de-facto referendums? It could lead to disaster.

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.

A portrait shot of Gizmo the orange Maine Coon cat looking handsome as he lounges on a comfy chair. Looking left slightly off camera as we face him, he has his front legs out and set wide apart with massive snow dipped paws at the end of each one. His snowy white chest fur flows from under his chin to meet the chair and his gorgeous orange markings and fur on his face are glowing! Amongst all the handsomeness on display are magnificent long white whiskers which have gotten so long and curly that some from his muzzle and some from above his eyes have met in the middle and form a circle of whiskers!
