Sir Ian McKellen orates 'The Stranger's Case' from 'Sir Thomas More' by Shakespeare about the Evil May Day xenophobic riot of 1517 in London. This passage was written 400 years ago, but times never change. Humanity refuses to change its unwarranted bias against 'others'.

As a resident I could not argue with much there but equally did not capture what living here is really like. The Finance industry was here in the 70s and 80s and is now much more strongly regulated than implied here. Benefits are higher than UK, cost of living greater, taxation lower. +ves & -ves!

TV HIGHLIGHTS
72 Up
The award-winning documentary series continues, charting the progress of one posh little boy, Nigel, over the years.
The last time we saw him was over a week ago in 36
Up when he had been given £36 million out of the blue.
In the latest instalment Nigel is given another £36 million, making the total donation a jaw-dropping £72 million.
This is a life changing moment for the former prep school boy who was recorded in the first episode singing the Horst Wessel song and coming up with charming but embarrassing comments about admiring Hitler.
As the clock moves forward
to 72 Up, viewers now see a completely different Nigel from the one we have come to know so well over the years
- from Europe-hating MEP to Brexit-promoting campaigner to the triumphant bin-defeating statesman of today. It's been a roller-coaster ride for Nigel
- and indeed the viewer - and this remarkable series ends with a poignant and moving climax in a Clacton oyster bar, where the older but no wiser Nigel faces the prospect of being Prime Minister and/or going to jail after criminal proceedings.
EYE VERDICT: "Boring, boring, Boring! Nothing to see here
- put a sock in it, love."

(Insert photo of him slurping up oysters)

We have responded to HM Inspectorate of Prisons’ review of children in custody, published today. The report looks at evidence gathered from inspections, survey findings and interviews from children held in four young offender institutions and a secure training centre. ow.ly/BnGn50ZPJ6M
“Prison is no place for a child.
We know this from the calls we receive each week. We see it in the reports and official statistics showing that children are locked up for hours on end. And today, we hear it again from the children themselves, through the many survey responses that
have been collated by inspectors.”

Burnham will meet Irish PM as UK bids to get exemptions from EU’s ‘Made in Europe’ plan – UK politics live
It will be the first time the PM uses No 10 North to host an overseas visit while the chancellor will be in Dublin meeting with EU finance ministers Good morning. On Monday, at her summit in Cardiff with the leaders of the SNP and Plaid Cymru, Mary Lou McDonald, the Sinn Féin president, joked about Liverpool being the 33rd county of Ireland. Andy Burnham is basically a Scouser; he was born in Liverpool and supports a Liverpool football team, despite being brought up in Culcheth, a village mid-way between Liverpool and Manchester, which made him enough of a Manc to be the city’s mayor. He also has Irish ancestry, and so the mood should be very cordial today when he hosts Micheál Martin, the taoiseach (Irish PM) at No 10 North in Manchester this morning. It is the first time that Burnham has used No 10 North to host an overseas visit, which should help a bit his efforts to establish that No 10 North is a proper government power base, and not just a branch office. The historic visit to No 10 North comes as the prime minister shines a spotlight on towns up and down the country, days after he hosted Canadian prime minister Mark Carney in Liverpool and Nato secretary general Mark Rutte in Oxford. According to a column in the Times, gangs of masked vigilantes blocking roads have demands which "represent a consensus view across the country". This is very patently utter bollocks. Daniel Thomas, the organiser, is a far-right racist thug. His views are not in any way mainstream.
Should anyone wonder that groups of angry white men in balaclavas have now started occupying Dover and blockading coaches sent to ship more and more men into this utterly negligent system? It’s astonishing it hasn’t happened sooner. I don’t mean I want to see gangs of masked bricklayers marauding around ports. I don’t. But I do think that if you have spent three years allowing masked Gaza activists to take over the streets because police are too scared to stop them, and five years blocking policies such as Rwanda that would actually stop the boats, you cannot start hyperventilating the moment working-class British men take to the streets non-violently, as in Dover if not Portsmouth, to make their feelings known.

The non-violence is obviously critical. This was not a riot, as we saw in 2024. It was not a campaign of harassment. It did not target random people. And unlike the Gaza marches or “stop oil” stunts, its demands represent a consensus view across the country and relate to something under the government’s direct control. They amount to: “Can the government please do what it promised and stop ferry-loads of undocumented foreign men arriving on our beaches to fill up regional hotels and roam around town centres?” They might reasonably also ask for the Home Office to stop handing out asylum to the thousands who falsely claim it while visiting on student or work visas.
