I agree that IIT and GNWT are too complex to be useful but newer theories like @ncowan51.bsky.social ’s funneling idea deserves some serious attention (no pun intended)

This is insane! And tracks with some communication I've had from current or recent NSF program officers recently, and nothing they told me gave me hope this is going to improve much anytime soon.

2. When you do suggest reviewers, don't just suggest the most established people doing research on that topic. Instead, suggest younger faculty or post-docs since often they accept the assignment, and as a bonus they often still know how to analyze data etc. ; ) #science #psychology #neuroscience

Some advice for authors submitting to journals (a very short thread from an editor at 2 APA journals): 1. Please always suggest reviewers because your action editor probably isn't going to be an expert on the specific topic of your paper, though hopefully they are adjacent at least.

Yes, that's true. I'm at a large commuter university but we have pretty small classes so a lot of my colleagues assign a fair bit of writing but AI and other challenges make it pretty hard to promote learning. Getting students to talk in class (assuming they show up) seems like part of the solution.

If I do not treat writing as essential for achieving thought, it is not clear why I should force my students to.

A mathematician who was interviewed on NPR made a compelling argument why AI is going to be very bad for the field of math. The argument was basically that it will break the incremental *process* of discovery which is just as important as the discoveries themselves.

Do you allow students to use AI to generate images? I have to say I find it very jarring when a talk at a conference pops up exactly one AI-generated image, often for humor. Seems like a mixed message when AI is such a no-no for other aspects of our work.

I appreciate the possibility of putting to the test whether something doesn't replicate because of 'tacit knowledge', as has sometimes been claimed. OTOH, we're not all going to wear head-mounted cameras (or eye-trackers) while doing science, are we?
