#cogpsyc #AcademicSky🧪 🧠 A good figure makes the structure of an effect visible at a glance. Great figures, like great scientific writing, are precise and self-explanatory. A high information/ink ratio in both domains makes your argument easier to see, and harder to dismiss.

#cogpsyc #AcademicSky🧪 🧠 If you justify your sample size as "comparable to prior work", we will ask you to remove that claim. Precedent is not a justification — it moves the question one paper back. Prior work can still inform your expected effect size, with due caution about published estimates.

#cogpsyc #AcademicSky🧪 🧠 Small-N designs can be informative, with a lot of data per S. Estimate the effect within S, then ask if it replicates across S. A pooled analysis across all trials can produce impressive, but misleading, precision. See Smith & Little (2018), doi.org/10.3758/s134...

#cogpsyc #AcademicSky🧪 🧠 We prefer a realistic account of power to an overly optimistic one. A clear and convincing case that a study has 55% power for the effect the authors consider meaningful is more useful than a figure above .80 that depends on an effect size chosen to produce it.

#cogpsyc #AcademicSky🧪 🧠 Convenient equipoise: a writing move that presents a literature as evenly divided, so that only new data could settle it, without comparing the studies on power, measurement quality, or explaining that one set was designed to fix flaws in the other.

Tip for junior authors: the strongest submissions we get do not only ask, "Does my theory predict this?" but "What would someone with a different theory predict?" The most compelling papers explain how their experiments can distinguish between those answers. #cogpsyc #AcademicSky🧪

Tip for junior authors: A power analysis is only as good as the effect size you feed it. "Medium" is not a justification. Tell us whether your effect size comes from prior empirical work (justifying that choice) or from theory (e.g., the smallest effect you'd care to detect). #cogpsyc #AcademicSky🧪

Tip for junior authors: Use the same effect size metric in your power analysis and in your results. If you report d, don't power for partial η². Reviewers can't tell whether you achieved the effect you planned to detect if the units shift between sections. #cogpsyc #AcademicSky🧪

Tip for junior authors: What matters isn't whether a power analysis was run before or after data collection, but whether it depends on the observed effect size. If based on theory, prior studies, or meta-analysis, it remains independent of the data. The problem is circularity, not timing.

Tip for junior authors: Keep your cover letter short. Clarify (1) the fit to the journal’s mission and (2) what kinds of reviewers would be most appropriate. Especially for work that bridges areas, or if the paper could be misread as belonging to a different area than the one you see as central.

Tip for junior authors: Clarifying exclusions increases trust in your work. Distinguish attention checks from outlier removal, justify both, and show how exclusions affect results. Understand that aggressive reaction time trimming can bias results and reduce power. Share all data with clear flags.

Probably a rhetorical questions, but I'll add the data anyway: We recently estimated—among other things—adoption of Bayesian analyses across different areas of psychology. The plots show the last 20 years and (rather simple) projections for the next 20 years. osf.io/preprints/ps...
6-panel plot showing adoption of Bayesian analyses for 6 psychology journals from different fields. Histograms show historical data from 2004 to 2024. Predictions from five-parameter logistic growth curve model with forecasts till 2044 are overlaid. Sample size for journals vary from 2009 to 3686. Use of Bayesian analyses is increasing in all journals and projected to level of at varying levels between 25% and 75%.
