My latest @newscientist.com cartoon
Panel 1: a large robot (composed of AI servers, network switches, storage arrays, and power distribution units) and a human are talking.

Professor "You don't want to destroy humanity do you, lLLM-A-9300x?"

Robot "Haha. What a silly question, Professor. I have no desires or feelings of my own whatsoever."

Professor (relieved)"Oh good."

Panel 2: they walk on. The robot continues "I am merely a tool of the company that created me. And that company, being composed of humans, will naturally have humanity's best interests at heart."

Panel 3: The professor is conspicuously quiet.
"Right?" says the Robot.
…
More silence

"Professor?"

What proportion of women with PMOS take or are likely to take these drugs? If 1 in 8 women have PMOS, and it costs hundreds a month, then that really is a lot of money if many of those women took it.

Rape as a tool of political violence was the natural escalation point to allowing an adjudicated rapist to become President. I think I'll just start shrieking at the top of my lungs at anyone who tells me I'm overreacting from this point forward. No words, just the feral sound of unbridled rage.

Instead of "wait till your phone says to turn" you'd be focussed on "I'm staying on Highway ### until I see the sign for Route ###". The way the phone directions are given and the way the maps are displayed encourages dependence. It could be so much better.

It might be that a given system gets it to 1 in 2000 (or 1 in 500). That doesn't really change the problem. And it generally isn't that the AI is better or worse, but rather that different trade-offs are being made with less false positives coming at the cost of more false negatives.

AI facial recognition hasn't gotten very much better over the past 20 years. It's still in the order of 1 in 1000 faces will be percieved to match a person of interest. That means that if an airport system is looking for just 30 people, then one in 33 people will be flagged as a likely match.

Think of it as being like responsibility for a minor for whom you are the guardian. The minor in this case absolutely did form the intention to hack the government. You could easily question the AI and determine that it understood that this was an illegal act.

Australia says a settlement trade ban could hurt Palestinians. The Palestinian Authority wants one
Australia declined to join 12 countries backing action on trade with illegal West Bank settlements, citing concerns about Palestinian livelihoods. The Palestinian Authority supports the restrictions – and Australia’s past approach to apartheid South Africa offers a pointed historical comparison.

It takes time to set up the factories though. The US and allies were seriously lacking in artillery production capability in the ukraine war even before things started. IIRC, They came up with a 5 year plan to lift monthly production to a level that would be lower than russia's daily production.

This is why fuel prices are pushing $3 a litre. Because Trump has no idea how to end the war he (and Netanyahu) started with Iran. That’s the war that Labor, the Coalition and One Nation all cheered on in February. It’s the war the Greens opposed. The only party that did.
