Small cross-stitched art of a stylized dark brown dog standing and looking behind with a toothy grin. Some blood is dripping from the mouth. There is a light brown rabbit in the stomach and some small details like dots and flowers around it.

They all share the same concept of having intentional knowledge gates. That’s not something that most games have which means it’s worth having a genre for.

What do your kids' friends play, though? I have noticed a lot of gamedevs (including myself) eager to jump into "kids these days actually hate f2p/roblox shit" but it's almost always gamedev kids - their friends are mostly playing f2p mobile games on their phones and fortnite/roblox if they console.

Every inch of Roblox and numerous other predatory mobile games is designed to exploit children for as much of their attention and parent’s money as possible. No solid game can compete in this sort of economy. Parents don’t care either because iPads are far cheaper and easier to use than consoles.

I’m 100% certain that the average young video game consumer is massively into Roblox, Fortnite, and Minecraft and not Animal Well or obscure horror titles. I wish my nieces and nephews or their friends liked those sorts of games, but they (and a vast majority) don’t and the figures reflect that.

Game is out! Free on itch if anyone wants to play. It's similar mechanically to The Return of the Obra Dinn, Type Help, and Her Story. #GameDev #IndieDev

I often have very inquisitive deep dives on a variety of things in terms of identity, who I am, who I strive to be, what I consist of, what all this "being" is, and a good portion of that was questioning if I was even really a man, and I am as cis as the world is round. TL;DR: Not my experience.

I have an obsession with 19th century maritime history. The best game ever made is The Return of the Obra Dinn.

A kid with a phone in the modern day isn’t emulating 90s deep cuts in lieu of owning a console, they’re all on Roblox or Fortnite, the culture they have been raised up in has cemented those ‘forever games’ over anything else. It’s horrible and stagnant.

I've definitely wanted to implement the error diffusion used in Obra Dinn for a while. If I put this game on Steam after the jam with some big updates I'll try it out for sure.

I also tried the palette with ApplyPal and it came out quite nicely. I'm doubtful that I actually did the paletting properly with my implementation in Unity but I don't have a ton of time left to ship.

Doing a game jam is certainly interesting. I’ve realised that UI, modelling, all of these things that I’ve come to dislike over the years really aren’t that bad. It reminds me of what things were like at the very start of my career. I might change up how I work on my proper games.

I did try a cleaner look but I surprisingly like the dirtier one. I might make it a toggle though. Although this is just with improved dithering and not the palette specifically.

Ruben S. @atomicagegames.co.uk · 23/06/2026
Some renders / games had dithering, I’m not entirely sure how common it is but it does bring the look of my particular game together nicely. I’ll try palettes and other dithering techniques like Blue Noise or Error Diffusion later on though to see if the chunkiness is something worth reducing.

When Gaussian Splats get better with animations I’d love to see what a pixelated effect would look like on a 3D recording of a person. Hopefully it’d look rotoscoped but hopefully with a lot less effort.

Well that's the main reason I'm making this raytracer - to be part of making this older style more accessible again. Phong shaded ray tracers sorta got replaced by newer PBR path tracers and we lost something with that IMHO. It's not impossible to do today - but I hope to make it an easier option.

I would love to see a real-time Myst-like or something along those lines in this style. It’s fairly easy to get looking good with any genre really and it doesn’t cost much. I’m surprised there aren’t too many games using it. 90s nostalgia seems ‘in’ too.

Ruben S. @atomicagegames.co.uk · 22/06/2026
Thanks! I went with pixel art for this because I supposed that I wouldn’t have time for proper character models, but it gives me an old-school Sierra vibe so I think it fits. More accurate characters would certainly be a bit difficult to take seriously 😆

Ruben S. @atomicagegames.co.uk · 22/06/2026
If people dig the style post-jam I might experiment with more ‘accurate’ techniques like raytracing and whatnot, I’ll try out the palleting now, really helpful anyway

I’ll have to look at my shader graph, I wrote it pretty quickly, but that’s a good tip. I’ll tweak it either way

That looks really cool! I got quite lazy on the first day and just did whatever was quickest (dithering the screen around when it was pixelated) but I have until Sunday so I’ll try this out, thanks

I’d describe it as reverse-gatekeeping. If a developer suggests a game is in a certain genre, and they’re very obviously wrong, it’s extremely difficult to say that on social media without a great many people decrying you for ‘negativity’, calling you a ‘gatekeeper’. Sometimes gatekeeping is good!
