Nondrivers need and deserve mobility that lets us fully participate in our lives and communities. That includes access to recreation. #WeekWithoutDriving

We know that mobility in cities is about space. More specifically, more trips in less space. We’ve seen lots of great images reinforcing that point. This one might be my favourite, from #Santiago, because it ALSO shows the inequality of having buses run in mixed traffic. Dedicated bus-only lanes.
Side-by-side comparison of a Santiago Street, on the left with vehicles, and on the right with the people they carry, showing how much space single occupancy cars take up on our streets in cities. Noteworthy is a cluster of people in the middle where the full bus is sitting stuck in traffic among all those cars with just one person each in them.

I was at a parade today and obvs there were political campaigns. One Republican campaign had a guy calling out "Vote [candidate] for more freedom!" Republicans offer diminished access, fewer choices, more restrictions (unless you're a rich, white man). Less freedom. People see this, right?

Jaywalking a completely American construct, based on industry lobbying, which doesn't exist in law in UK. We are free to run into traffic wherever we like (except motorways). But pedestrian casualties are lower here because drivers have to take responsibility.

Contrary to what the sign reads, this road is actually open to pedestrians today and will be hopping tonight as part of Burnsville Festival. #openstreets (No idea why there's a Hastings police trailer in Burnsville.)

IMPORTANT: The Dutch invested €595 million annually on urban biking, resulting in €19 BILLION saved in public health care costs alone. That’s how smart governments do the math on investing in better mobility. Let’s be clear— it WASTES public money to NOT do it. #CityMakingMath HT @modacitylife.com

The strongest proof of success is what happened after Plante left office. Despite the election of a successor critical of pedestrian streets, they're being institutionalised. A policy easy to attack in theory becomes much harder to dismantle once residents, merchants, and visitors live its benefits.

To create a truly great people-place, it starts with removing the vehicles, to make room for everything else a GREAT STREET can offer. But that’s not NEARLY enough — it’s not just what you remove, it’s WHAT YOU ADD! Things that are magnetic, that attract people, and entice them to stay a long time.

It's strange to me that this stuff works because, as a cis straight white man, my existence & importance has been affirmed by just about everything my entire life. If anything, I feel guilt over how little I care whether others think I'm "man enough" because I know that not caring is a privilege.

When urbanists take pictures of a Paris street (like Rue de Rivoli) showing all the people on bikes now taking advantage of protected infrastructure, it’s not just because we “like bikes.” It’s because we’re picturing the gridlock if they were driving cars. And the public cost, pollution, noise…

Countries that take these actions will be way better off than those that don't in the long run. Investing in clean energy is good economic policy, we just tend to ignore or downplay the costs of environmental disaster.
