This is exactly how I talk about it too! I've seen Gen AI try to write good comms and it's always completely terrible (see - most of LinkedIn, a bunch of the newer FB 'nz politics influencer' types.

Screenshot of a tumblr post reading: recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.

If it's as good as say "a junior" at any skill then it's going to be better than what 99% of the population can do themselves So for many it is gone from "do yourself or pay somebody" to "use AI or pay somebody"

I had an AI advocate at work tell me how AI could make my work better and all I came away from the conversation with was, "You have no idea what I actually do in my job".

I've noticed a large contingent of this in people saying "well it's great for coding" by those who have low/no knowledge of coding, or are very bad at it.

If it can't perform in the areas where I know enough to judge the quality of it's outputs, why would I trust AI to perform in the fields where I don't have sufficient knowledge to understand if it's doing a good job or not?
