I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

Happy weekend! Ancient clay pots with octopus decoration from Bronze Age Crete some 3,500 years ago! 🐙❤️ Heraklion Archaeological Museum 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo collage shows four pottery vessels, all creamy yellow in colour, with black painted decoration depicting lively stylised octopuses with writhing arms. All on display at Heraklion Archaeological Museum, Crete.

Top L - Minoan storage jar decorated in ‘Marine Style’ with a wide-eyed octopus, argonauts, rocks, and coral. Rounded body which tapers to a narrow circular base. Short cyclindrical neck with black wavy decoration reminiscent of waves. Loop handles attached to the shoulders. Height 55 cm. From Zakros, 1500-1450 BC

Top R - The iconic Minoan ‘Marine Style’ flask. Rounded body with short cyclindrical neck out-flared at rim, and two small curved handles attached between the top of the spout and the shoulders of the flask. An almost cartoon-like octopus, with wide eyes and sucker-lined arms. Other motifs include sea urchins, seaweed and rocks. Height 27cm. From Palaikastro, 1500-1450 BC.

Bottom L - Minoan alabastron, broad at the base, swelling outwards into a fuller belly before narrowing near the top with a very short cyclindrical neck with flat rim. Decorated in “Marine Style” with a wide-eyed octopus among rocks. From Knossos Little Palace, 1450-1370 BC.

Bottom R - ‘krater’ with rounded body narrowing at the bottom towards the foot. Wide flaring mouth and rim with black painted wavy decoration, and two sturdy handles attached on each side between the top of the mouth and shoulders of the vessel. Decorated with a front facing stylised octopus with wide eyes and tentacles which loop up and down around the body of the pot, 1370-1300 BC.

english isn't for cowards. if you're not saying 'torpify,' that's a skill issue. there's no Académie Française telling you what to do. if you try to type 'pallific' and freak out when you see a little red underline, maybe you're not ready to roll with the big dogs.

If you don't want to be compared to the Gestapo, one neat trick is to not engage in a campaign of terror around the country wherein you kidnap people off the streets to slave dungeons in accommodation of an autocratic fascist and his nationalist movement's desire for racial purity.
Homeland Security tweets: It is absolutely sickening to compare ICE law enforcement agents to the Gestapo.

Really interesting, although much later than the coin I’m dealing with. But perhaps the Roman’s had something similar, we certainly know they were catching birds by other methods!

It's paired with a large nail on the obverse which I would assume is for hanging it up (whatever it may be). I checked some places where I know there are bird cages, like the house of Livia frescoes, but no luck with bird houses so far even though they seem like a thing the Romans would have loved

Thanks! I guess I'm looking more for something you would hang in a tree for small birds, but this is a helpful comparandum anyway. I'll check some of the references from the article though!

I guess I could also be more specific, basically I'm wondering if there is any chance the symbol on this coin (RRC 384, s. 155) is a bird house. It looks a lot like a modern bird house but I do not think I've ever seen a bird house in Roman art...

Random 🏺Ancient Bluesky question: is anyone aware of depictions of bird houses in Roman art? Not bird cages, but houses where wild birds could live? A few internet searches didn't turn up anything helpful but if anyone has leads they would be greatly appreciated!
