You don't have to compete with what you see as "cream of the crop", your game can be entirely you and an audience will feel it. Don't use AI. Especially as "placeholder" because that will just strike your conscience harder if you feel you can't look better than it.

I do *not* play extraction shooters like at all (too stressful, and I dislike overall lack of goals outside of loot grind), but Marathon kicks ass, even solo. What helps a ton, is your primary focus is on quests and less so on loot, meaning a loss is always a win if you finished your objectives.
