No one had to think super hard about how to make a washing machine useful. A telephone. A vacuum cleaner. So why do our bosses have to constantly challenge us to find something, anything, for which AI might be helpful If your customers don’t find your product useful, that’s a you-problem

Informative read on fascism’s comeback: “Living through a global resurgence of fascism, the greatest difficulty has proved to be not arguing against it but convincing non-fascists that fascism’s adherents really mean it. That they believe what they are telling us they believe—& will act accordingly”

I just ordered a water bottle, shorts, and underwear. Guess I will go with Paul Shorts even though the underwear was the last thing I selected.

There was a genesis to this phenomenon I've never seen spoken about. 8-10 years ago I used to be in a lot of online hobby spaces. They had long had a 'optimisation culture' where a many folk didn't do stuff guided by enjoyment, but by following an 'optimal' path....

This is very good. www.404media.co/the-medias-p...
AI is a tool (sorry!) that people who are bad at their jobs will use badly and that people who are good at their jobs will maybe, possibly find some uses for. People who are terrible at their jobs (many executives), will tell their employees that they “need” to use AI, that their jobs depend on it, that they must become more productive, and that becoming an AI-first company is the strategy that will save them from the old failed strategy, which itself was the new strategy after other failed business models.

The only journalism business strategy that works, and that will ever work in a sustainable way, is if you create something of value that people (human beings, not bots) want to read or watch or listen to, and that they cannot find anywhere else.

Do not normalize children dying from measles. Measles was previously eliminated in the US, thanks to vaccines. When children die from measles, it means that adults have catastrophically failed to protect them because they have rejected basic science.

I have wonderful students. Undergraduates. Instead of giving standard tests, I ask them to write summary topic papers in which they have to use foundational information to support an argument related to a broader concept. I want to share two opening paragraphs with you.

"Stunningly, however, those who had learned expecting to be tested had forgotten much more. Their superior rote memorization was no longer in evidence a few days later. Evidently, they memorized the material for the test, and when the test was over, they pulled the plug and let it drain out."

The goal is have students think conceptually about the brain while gaining foundational knowledge about it rather than just providing the foundational knowledge. If that makes sense to you, I would love your suggestions. 6. #neuroscience #introtoBN

Rather than discuss hunger and the areas of the brain involved in hunger and eating, I want to talk about what hunger tells us about the brain and its association with behavior. Same material, different focus. 5 #neuroscience #introtoBN

I want to use the intro course to set the majors up for success in the conceptually difficult upper level courses (though student have done great in them so far) and to entice non-majors to think about neuroscience as a major. 4. #neuroscience #introtoBN

I am teaching a course on Pet Behavior in the spring. Anyone have any good articles or resource suggestions on dogs, cats, and other critters? I am planning sections on the psychology of pet ownership, ESAs, dogs on campuses, and the students will pick the pets and behaviors that interest them.
