Omigod, this is the most heartwarming story possible! Backpack (bear 89) is the son of the 2019 winner of Fat Bear Week, Holly (bear 435). In 2007, he injured his foot & a practice of riding on momma's Holly's back had a new meaning: he was mobility-restricted while it healed. So Holly moved him.
From DISCVR blog's Facebook page, a momma bear & a yearling cub on her back in the shallow water. I think the background has been swapped out, and I can't rule out some AI use there? God, Facebook has become the social media for AI slop : (

The title of the article, which I link below, is "How Bear 89 earned the name Backpack"

truly my most "I am very basic and I don't care if things seem complicated I think they can also just be simple" opinion is that you should buy a house or a flat if you want a place to live in and I just don't really care if price goes up or price goes down, you have a roof! that was the whole point

Jesus wept, trying to find a normal bike pump but they just don't exist anymore? No it's all air compressors and c02 canisters and fast release foot pumps. It's a bike tire!! I just need a pump that screws on, not some fancy nonsense lol.

Endless pursuit of wealth and power by western leaders led us here. What strikes me most is how many saw what was coming, says Guardian columnist Owen Jones

We in science have fundamentally failed to teach inference and argumentation. So much of STEM looks at an argument as solely "provide proof for your point", which is opinion with extra steps.

I swear, computer software has become obsessed with like "dont make someone go more than 2 layers deep into menus", which has led to everything being completely unpredictable as to where it's actually located. I recall a portal where "fees" was not where you paid fees, but instead saw fees.

3 panel comic titled “Logging into Bluesky”

Panel 1:
A Pink Guy bursts into Bluesky wearing a t-shirt that says “Fun”. His little face looks so happy.

Panel 2:
Six Bluesky users turn to look at the Pink Guy. They all look dour and angry because they have been overdosing on the discourse. Having the current state of the world mainlined into their veins for 22 hours a day has left them real grumpy.

Panel 3:
Pink Guy slowly removes his t-shirt and quietly says “sorry”. He won’t soon forget that Bluesky is the home of Serious Discussion. If he wants “Fun” maybe he should log into the Barney the Dinosaur forums.

Coming into the pro-AI bluesky space is sometimes so depressing just because it's so many people who don't understand why I don't code in my spare time. Like I'm meant to make a use for AI in my life at my own detriment?

Noticing that a fundamental difference between people very pro AI and those completely underwhelmed is an assumption about how many people code or are computer power users. Coding is a niche task and working in tech is, to be honest, a socio-cultural insignificant job. Most people don't do that.

Just had a moment of bewilderment where I realise that I am someone who has to code but absolutely hates the task, making me the ideal person for LLMs if they did what they said. Yet somehow, it's still an unappealing product. It's like making a washing machine and me still choosing to wash by hand

Interesting ideas are free and abundant. The most interesting events can be boring to listen to told by an uninspired story teller (or AI). The most mundane things can be moving and beautiful if told correctly.

The ignobels prizes where an absolute blast to attend. Had a great time and first time I'd felt mirth in science since before PhD.
The ignobel prize for biology being awarded for gently stepping on various parts of various venemous snakes repeatedly, at various temperatures, at various times of day - to try to learn what does and does not induce a snake to bite a human.

Many oddly dressed academics and Nobel laureates on a stage, as part of the award ceremony.

On an MRI headcoil there is a little mirror for the person in the MRI to be able to see a screen outside of the MRI. It's just a little mirror, about 2x4cm on a piece of plastic. It costs 11,500CHF (just over 14,000 USD). it has no electronics, no moving parts. Nothing.
