New (to me) toy! Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 AI-S. So glad I was too cheap to buy a system lens! I played with the Fujifilm 90mm f/2, and it was a good lens, but boring. The 105mm on my Fujifilm is the first digital setup I have had with proper affordances for MF. It feels amazing. // #photography

"The unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics may not be unreasonable at all. Nature and mathematics may meet because both are ultimately descriptions of structure. The surprises occur because humans notice the structures in one domain long before recognising the same structures elsewhere."

this is real dunning-kruger stuff he's doing, and I'm not a computational linguist myself, but an answer to why LLMs don't think is that they don't understand the *meaning* of words because to understand meaning you would have to also exist outside of a language model, which an LLM does not

I shot 6000 photos on a six week jaunt to lots of places. I edited it down to 900 or so, immortalized here: flickr.com/photos/84348715@N00/albums/72157633801432181/ But these two didn't make that cut! #photography

From my archives. Hong Kong, early 2011. A couple of shots that didn't make into my original edit and presentation of that trip. These two whispered to me and I now suspect I could spend years mining my archive for beauty and never tire. Nikon D3100 Nikkor 18-200mm #photography
Specular reflections in windshields. tease the beauty out of a Hong Kong street scene; colorful signage spills over the roadway like exotic bird plumage.A not-so-high (maybe 20 floors?) high rise in Kowloon bathes in the afternoon sun. Stark shadows underscore an almost steampunk patina of air conditioners, rust and windows. The sun glints into the len off a window on the 16th floor.

I wrote a column some years ago about how the dying off of Holocaust survivors and educators has contributed to the rise of contemporary fascism. The same goes for the people who *fought* fascists. This is a real thing. Living memory is powerful.

2007, December. Would have been in or around Karlsruhe or Stuttgart; I visited a business partner in Karlsruhe, and then a friend in Stuttgart after. This was a Saturday, so it most likely was closer to Stuttgart. I don’t know what it was of. I want it to matter, but it doesn’t. // #photography

I feel like the reboot is my Fuji X-T5 (a very modern mirrorless with classic knobs), which is often clocked as a film camera by civilians. It looks like your grandpa or dad’s camera from your childhood and that is canon. #photography

eng leaders, how are you handling the gap between “vibe coded demo” and “production ready feature”? i mean from both the software development and the managing the expectations of senior leadership POVs? do you give estimates for time it would take to make the demo production ready during the demo?

This is so, so well-articulated.
People call this friction "grunt work." Schwartz uses exactly that phrase, and he's right that LLMs can remove it. What he doesn't say, because he already has decades of hard-won intuition and doesn't need the grunt work anymore, is that for someone who doesn't yet have that intuition, the grunt work is the work. The boring parts and the important parts are tangled together in a way that you can't separate in advance. You don't know which afternoon of debugging was the one that taught you something fundamental about your data until three years later, when you're working on a completely different problem and the insight surfaces. Serendipity doesn't come from efficiency. It comes from spending time in the space where the problem lives, getting your hands dirty, making mistakes that nobody asked you to make and learning things nobody assigned you to learn.

4-panel comic. (1) [Glowing black dot surrounded by clouds.] DOT: I think I did a good job with this universe. Pressure waves dance through gas clouds. They clump together and then pressure pushes them apart. (2) [Some of the clouds are clumping together.] DOT: Oh weird, that big clump of clouds is staying together. Their gravity is overcoming the pressure and more gas is falling in. (3) [More clouds are sucked in.] DOT: It’s not stopping! The heat is rising but the collapse is only accelerating! I messed up. I messed up *bad*. (4) [The clump has become a shining star.] DOT: NOOOOOOOO!!! My beautiful clouds! Ruined! It’s all ruined!
